If I rename a blog, is old name immediately available?

I seem to have mucked up my blog. Want to fix it but need to know something:

I like the oldname.wordpress.com address. If I rename oldname to newname, is the oldname URL available immediately, or in a short time, for me to create a brand spanking new blog using oldname.wordpress.com?

Help much appreciated. I don’t want to try it in case I lose oldname forever, which is what seems to happen if I delete the oldname site.

    Hope this makes sense…

As long as you don’t delete oldname, it’s yours forever. Once you delete oldname.wordpress.com it’s gone forever.

newname.wordpress.com will have to be registered using a separate email address. Keep in mind you can have as many .COM blogs as you want.
