If I use WordPress for my existing website, can I retain my existing addresses?
-
I am considering using WordPress for my website. I currently have three addresses to two sites with HostPapa, ie http://www.hhu.org.uk and http://www.hfha.org.uk which connects to http://www.friendsofkamulimissionhospital.org
My question is can I continue to use these addresses if I move to WordPress and if so, how do I organise it? -
Hi there. First, do you know there are two versions of WordPress, .com and .org?
At the moment, you’re on WordPress.com. For WordPress.com you’ll first need to register a free address. Then you buy the domain mapping upgrade to connect the free site with your custom domain. In other words, you’ll have to keep paying your registrar(s) for the domains, and you pay WordPress.com for the mapping. Hosting is free on WordPress.com. You can map more than one domain to a single WordPress.com blog. Note that if you have a WordPress.com site, you’re bound by the WordPress.com Terms of Service, which includes not being able to add advertising to your site. You also can’t add custom themes or install plugins.
WordPress.org is the self-hosted option. There you can install custom themes and plugins, and you can monetise your site with advertising if you prefer. You’ll need to set up a hosting account with a web host of your choosing, and install the WordPress.org software to that account to start building your site. More information on that here: http://wordpress.org/hosting/ We don’t provide support for WordPress.org on this forum, so if you decide to go this route, please visit the WordPress.org forum for help: http://wordpress.org/support/
