If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

How can I say this differently? I have never deleted the avatars — either from my hard drive picture file OR from WordPress’ image gallery
because they are used repeatedly. The posts you have used as
examples are recent — from this past summer, the period when the
images starting disappearing from the posts. But before I began
using the new computer with Chrome. And — again and again —
why have older posts (after the Great Disapperance) from earlier
in 2013, back to 2009, retained their images? -
Sidenote, you can see why I was encouraging us to take issues one at a time? The conversation gets confusing when we jump around like this.
When I went to WordPress today to add a new
link to the list, I discovered that WordPress wouldn’t allow me to
do it by typing in its URL. First, it offered (as an option) META.What is the URL that you see in your browser bar when you are attempting to enter in a new link? Can you copy and paste it in here?
The typical URL for adding/modifying things in your widget area would be:
-
How can I say this differently? I have never deleted the avatars — either from my hard drive picture file OR from WordPress’ image gallery
Somebody who was logged in using your WordPress.com account deleted those images. I cannot say if it was you or if it was someone else. All I can see is that it was your user account. Could anyone else have been using your user account for any reason? Do other people log in as you to post on your site?
-
And — again and again —
why have older posts (after the Great Disapperance) from earlier
in 2013, back to 2009, retained their images? This is because you have uploaded that same image to WordPress.com many different times:
https://apollosgirl.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php?search=westell
So, any posts that are using non-deleted versions of that image, would still display the image. Any that were trying to use a version that was deleted, would no longer display that image.
-
The only images I have uploaded to WordPress many different times are the avatars: the muses, John Branch, and Mel Cooper. Everything else has been used only once — the posts ar very varied, and require
different images for each post. So that doesn’t explain why the images
have disappeared only for a certain period — not before it, and not
(most recently) since I’ve been using Chrome. But one more time:
I have deleted images ONLY from the picture file on my hard drive —
NOT from WordPress’ picture gallery, ever. And yes, yes, yes. Today was REALLY special — not only did I notice
that the links section of the sidebar had gone missing (although the
search bar, the categories list, and the archive dates were still in
place), but when I went to the admin pages for the blog, and clicked
on the option for blogs I follow, I had real trouble (previously described
in these dialogues several times). I have just tried again, and managed
to delete the three copies of what I was offered. But — somehow — WordPress, along the way, added a second copy of categories (exactly
like the first) below META. I promise you it wasn’t me that put it there. Please: can I just call you — wherever you are — at my expense? This is
(for me, a non-techie) like falling down Alice in Wonderland’s rabbit
hole. I’ve tried to be as precise as I can about the troubles I’ve had over time (they have great variety), but I feel as if, somehow, no one understands what I’ve been saying. -

No. (Think this is a repeat.)
The only images used repeatedly are the avatars — all the others
are very different in eery post. -

(most recently)The timeframe is coincidental. It just means that those happened to be the images that were deleted. It is not indicative of any larger issue. One could, if they wanted to for some reason, delete all the images from posts that were in 2012, but leave all of those from 2011 and 2013.
I realize that it is frustrating, but the bottom line is that those images are gone. They do not exist anywhere on our system. They were deleted by someone using your WordPress.com account. Perhaps it was by mistake, after all you did say that you “clean up my media library periodically”. I think we’ve all deleted something that we wished we hadn’t. It can be easy to check the wrong checkbox or select-all instead of just one. But at this point, the images are gone and cannot be recovered. In the future, I would encourage you to not delete anything out of your image library. Particularly any image you have used in a post on your site.
But — somehow — WordPress, along the way, added a second copy of categories (exactly
like the first) below META.I have removed that second set of categories. When you were trying to do this yourself, were you using IE or Chrome? If IE, then I suspect that was the issue.
but when I went to the admin pages for the blog, and clicked
on the option for blogs I follow,When you do this, what is the URL you are seeing in your browser’s address bar? I ask this because it helps me troubleshoot what could be going wrong. It is very helpful information.

Finally found it — the category from my sidebar that disappeared was
Blogroll. where did it go?
I just tried to manually enter one link (for Director Talk), but it didn’t
appear in the sidebar. However: the second copy of Categories is now gone (thank God)…
or, perhaps, thank you. -
I just tried to manually enter one link (for Director Talk), but it didn’t
appear in the sidebar. What exactly are you trying to make the link say and what is the URL you would like it to point to?
-
It’s a replacement for the Blogroll category in the sidebar that has
disappeared very recently. I’d like to reinstate the Blogroll, with the URL for Directortalk:
http://earthwize.org/wordpress/directortalk/I’ve tried twice to bring it back to the sidebar, but I can’t.
Thanks again for eliminating the second copy of Categories.
-
I’m sure you’re tired of this long exchange. But I’ve had no answer to
the disappearance of the Blogroll from my widgets. I did absolutely
nothing to it, but want to reinstall it (even if I have to do it manually,
as there are not many URLs to input). And I want to add one new
URL. But couldn’t find any way to reinstall the category, or the new
URL. Please advise:Thanks,
Judith -
Sorry about that, I needed to check with one of the theme people who works in a different timezone to make sure that I wasn’t missing something.
The blogroll should be appearing now. You had it set to just appear on your site’s static “pages” and not in the posts (blog) area.
-
That’s true. But it just disappeared, along with the replication of my
categories. I will try to add the new blog to it — and I’ll let you know
how it goes.As for the original problem of images disappearing. Yes, I do, from time
to time, eliminate them from the picture file on my hard drive 9which
has nothing to do with WordPress). But until a year or so ago, the
protocol for uploading them to the blog was direct: I found the images
I wanted on the Web and stored them in my hard drive picture file. Then, when I had uploaded the text of a new post into the WordPress
editing template, I’d place the cursor where I wanted the image to go,
clicked on it in my picture file, and uploaded it to the WordPress
template. But there was NO picture gallery then. Now, WordPress
has a picture gallery; I have to upload the images from my hard drive
picture file into the WordPress gallery, select them after they appear
in the WordPress picture gallery, size them, and THEN place them in the
post. But what i was trying to explain yesterday was that I have NEVER
deleted images from the WordPress image gallery — only from my own
hard drive picture file.So the fact that several years’ worth of images have remained in
the blog (say, from 2009 to mid-2013) –though long since deleted from
my own hard drive picture file, suggests that something changed in
Wordpress’ technology in in-2013.I’m not going to attempt to re-insert the missing images into the posts
because it would simply take too long. But this long train of issues
began because I find that WordPress loves to constantly change its
protocols. This may be great for young techies, but for writers like me
who are interested in the content more than the technological innovation, it is often simply a cruel obstacle that often cannot be
overcome.
Please: if there’s any way to leave thing be when they ain’t broke,
I’d be deeply grateful.Judith

This is as far as I can get on the Widgets page.
https://apollosgirl.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.phpHow can I add a link to another blog under the Blogroll widget?
-
You would add additional links in your dashboard under “Links” on the left hand side. That is where the widget pulls from. Here is the direct URL:

Well, this one worked. Thank you very much.
But back to the issue (the really big one) of why the images in
my blog went missing. I will try to give some information that is
concise and clear:1) Before I upload a post into the WordPress editing template, I look
for good images. When I find them, I STORE THEM ON MY HARD DRIVE IN MY VERY OWN PICTURES FILE until I’m ready to insert them into
the post.2) Once I’ve chosen where the images should go,I’m ready; I use the WordPress editing template to click on Add Media. I then get a second editing template from WordPress, specifically for inserting images (or any other media). It lets me go back into my pictures file to choose what I want, and then uploads it into the WordPress image gallery.
so I can size and place it in the blog.3) After it’s placed, I make whatever small adjustments are necessary,
go to Preview (so I can see it as it will appear when published), make
any other small adjustments, and then Publish it.4) I’ve said this frequently: at intervals, I sometimes clean out MY VERY OWN PICTURES FILE ON MY HARD DRIVE so it doesn’t get overwhelmed. BUT I HAVE NEVER, NEVER, NEVER DELETE ANYTHING
DIRECTLY FROM THE WORDPRESS IMAGE GALLERY, which apparently keeps them in perpetuity.5) I’d like to share the obvious: my text is ALSO stored In my very own DOCUMENT FILE ON MY HARD DRIVE, just like the pictures file on my
hard drive (as distinct from the WordPress Image Gallery). Yet, even
though I also clean out the documents file from time to time to keep
it from being overwhelmed, at no time has WordPress ever deleted
a word of the blog texts, from 2009 to today.
