If WordPress.com blog is deleted, will custom domain be deleted, too?

  • Unknown's avatar

I wanted to know if, in the event one’s WordPress.com blog is deleted or suspended (for whatever reason), will the custom domain(s) registered through WordPress.com and associated with that particular WordPress.com blog be deleted, too? (I.e. will I still have ownership of the domain(s) if the WordPress.com blog associated with it is deleted/suspended?)

I hope that’s clear. For reference, I purchased two domains (not of relevance here as the question is simply general), one of which is the primary for the WordPress.com blog and the other is mapped. For precaution’s sake, I am asking my question here in help with determining whether I should move to the self-hosted WordPress.org and get paid Web-hosting.

Thanks in advance for help — I’ve been unable to find any info on this particular issue.

If you own an actual domain name then you can choose to map it wherever you want. If you want to map it to a self-hosted WordPress.org site somewhere else, go for it. If you want to map it to a WordPress.com site, then set that up. Does that answer your question?

Ariwinokur, thanks for your reply but that is not the answer I seek, though I appreciate your response. I tried very hard to search for answers to my question but have been unsuccessful…

I’m asking whether the custom domain you’ve purchased through WordPress.com for your WordPress.com blog is still yours (and perhaps yours to take elsewhere) in the event that the WordPress.com blog associated with that WordPress.com-purchased custom domain is deleted or suspended?

Does that make sense? WordPress.com doesn’t seem to cover that issue anywhere in their support pages. I’m concerned that, in the event of deletion/suspension of a blog, one could lose their custom domain along with it.

Thanks for any more help in advance!

    Hi contactdssl,

WordPress.com blogs and accounts are separate entities. If you register your domain through WordPress.com, you’ll still be able to use the Custom DNS feature to direct your site to a different host.

The support article you should look at is the one on Setting Custom A Records.

Do feel free to post back if you have any further questions!

Valentine, thank you for your reply; however, that still doesn’t answer my question. I apologize if I’ve been confusing.

A scenario that might be more illustrative of my question:

I purchase a custom domain from WordPress.com and make it a primary domain for a WordPress.com blog. Say, then, that I delete that blog OR WordPress suspends that blog with the custom domain — either way, the blog would be gone. Will I still have access to/maintain ownership of the CUSTOM DOMAIN, even though I no longer have that blog it was attached to?

I hope that was more clear as to my question; I couldn’t find any answers regarding whether you still retain ownership of just the custom domain regardless of the fate of the WordPress.com blog.

Thanks in advance for any additional help!

I searched around, and it seems like WordPress.com would still release your domain to you in the event of a suspension:

That said, this is an interesting question that lacks an official answer. I’ve tagged this topic for a Staff follow-up, but they’ll only be back on September 24, so we should only expect an answer after!

  • You will not be able to delete a blog if it has a custom domain attached, but you can make it private.

If your blog is suspended, you will still be able to control the domain.

Macmanx, that was just the answer I was looking for; thank you! I would suggest, if I may, that your answer be included somewhere in the support pages about custom domains? Just in case someone may also be wondering about the issue as I had.

Thank you, and thank you also, Valentine. :)

  • You’re welcome!
