  I’ve spent about 20 hours, on and off, trying to find the right code to enable me to colour the background of the search box.
  No dice.
  Dunno why: I’ve so often been able to do this in other themes …
  :-(

  If you want to change the background color, this would do it.

  .widget_search input.search-field {
      background: #cc0000;
  }

  Why I couldn’t find that, I don’t know – but I really did try bloody everything even remotely affiliated !
