Illustrated theme idea
-
The recent Garland controversy got me thinking about themes, and so I started playing with some ideas in Windows Paintbrush. I have produced a crude illustration of a theme that’s in accordance with my tastes and would suit me better than anything presently available.
To summarise the idea, it involves a blending of opposites: elements of prehistoric modern cave paintings blended with smooth curves that produce a modern, stylised feel. I’ve called it “Modern Ochre”.
I’ve uploaded the illustration and you can see it here. I have not yet written a post about it, but I am considering this.
Just an idea, to be adapted and improved by anyone who cares to.

personally i dislike the colour ochre (and does it not clash with the mint green column?), you might want to make options of other colours to appeal to more ppl. i like the wavy lines in between columns. it would be very appealing if it had a customised header, but that might be difficult to achieve with your wavy lines. you could provide an alternative by putting headers in as choices, like the colours (think regulus).
if you’re looking for someone to help you create this theme, i’m not sure if this is the right place. if you’re planning to create this theme but looking for feedback first, absolutely the right place.

The truth is, I would love to develop the theme (partly in order to learn how to do it) but I don’t have the resources.
However, the FAQ makes it very clear that ideas for themes are welcomed on this forum. As I understand it, the greater the diversity of ideas that are shared, the greater the benefit to the community – partly because each idea is a datapoint about what people might like (which is useful to those who make decisions about such things) but also because ideas inspire other ideas. It would be a waste to keep my thoughts to myself when they might be useful and inspiring to others.
As for colours clashing, I guess that’s just in the eye of the beholder. :-)

I think themes are comprised of many different elements … underlying structural templates and cascading style sheets that work together to provide both functionality and the desired appearance. IMO what you have prepared is a conceptual drawing – good on you.

problem is, it’s uncertain who will actually do the designing even if ideas for themes were put forth.
it would be nice if we have a theme designed by wp.com users. i used the term ‘design’ loosely, like a man who helped “design” his fiancee’s wedding ring. but design it still is!

I don’t have any issue with discussion of themes here. Just realize that staff has stated many times in the past that they look at requests for new themes via feedback from the dashboards of the users for the most part.
The idea of a User base created theme might be interesting though…

The reason I posted here is because I consulted the FAQ, and the FAQ said that posting here is the proper thing to do: “We are always looking to expand the range of themes we have, and feedback from you is taken into account when a new addition is being considered. The best place to request this is in the Ideas Forum“.
(Of course, I’m not so much blatantly requesting a theme as suggesting an idea or two, but the distinction isn’t that important in practical terms.)
I believe I would enjoy helping to design a theme, and in fact I am currently looking for opportunities to contribute code to community projects. But my limitations include (a) not (at least not yet) having a paid WordPress account with the CSS editing upgrade, and (b) not actually having any experience with CSS (although I think that doing a blog theme would be a fun way to learn). I know some PHP, Java and somewhat dated HTML but haven’t yet learned any Javascript or CSS, though both are high on my plans.
