illustratr – different menu title from heading title

In the live demo it says ‘hello, I am…’ where the heading is on the page. Then the menu item is home. I would also like to have home at the top menu but not in the heading. I do not want to hide the heading. Can you help me?

If it is done in CSS, do I have to upgrade and buy the theme? I would be happy to do that anyway to avoid the ads.

Also, how do I connect the categories (submenu under my portfolio page) to automatically link up with the project types I ahve assigned? I thought these were now the same things.

    thank you so much!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You blog seems to be set up exactly like the demo page, except that you have a custom header image the demo page doesn’t. Have you figured it out or do you still need help? If the latter, try to explain exactly what you want to do.

(BTW, John B. Webster is your site title/header (Illustratr on the demo page), then comes the menu, then comes the portfolio page title (“Portfolio” on your page, “Hello I am…” on the demo page). I just want us to be on the same page re. terminology to avoid misunderstanding.)

If it is done in CSS, do I have to upgrade and buy the theme?

To add any CSS to your site you have to buy the custom design upgrade:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/

You can’t buy the theme as Illustratr is a free theme and cannot be bought. Buying only applies to premium themes, and they don’t have free versions.

I would be happy to do that anyway to avoid the ads.

Buying a theme and buying custom design will do nothing about ads as you need a whole different upgrade to remove ads from your blog: http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

Also, how do I connect the categories (submenu under my portfolio page) to automatically link up with the project types I ahve assigned?

They don’t link up automatically. When creating or editing a portfolio project you assign categories to that project via the categories module. If you don’t see that module, click on Screen Options at the top of the screen and make sure Categories is selected.

You can also assign categories to projects by going to the All Projects submenu and using the Quick Edit link.

    Hello,

Ok, thanks for answering some of my questions. I guess it is difficult to explain exactly what I need.

I would like for the menu (underneath site title Johnb webster) to read home instead of portfolio. eliminate the fake home page we have now. I got to open the site it on the portfolio page, (hurray!) which is great but would like it to read ‘home’ in the menu, not ‘portfolio or hello I am…’ then I can delete the home we have now and just have it open on the portfolio page and also get to that again when you click home in the menu. It would be nice if the page title didn’t say portfolio but hello, please tale a look at some projects’ or something. When you try that it goes by that title under the menu so how to separate that?

then I would like another portfolio page (now called temporarily portfolio2) in the menu in case they want to see it again. Just like the demo. Then under the portfolio2 I have project types (is that categories? there is no word for categories, only projects types and tags) that I have added but they do not link up to the project types I have added under categories. They show up on the portfolio (opening homepage) page in the grey but not when you open them under the sub menu like you have in the demo.

I understand about buying separate adfree upgrades and the CSS. Since I don;t know much about the CSS, I am probably OK with what you have here. If we want to buy johnbwebsterdesign.com instead of wordpress.johnbwebsterdesign.com, how much is that and do you have to pray yearly?

    Thank you very much,
John B and Marian (his wife who is putting together)

  • would like it to read ‘home’ in the menu, not ‘portfolio or hello I am…’ then I can delete the home we have now and just have it open on the portfolio page and also get to that again when you click home in the menu.

To do that you would need to create a custom menu. With a custom menu you can rename or remove any menu headings, change the URL that heading point to, etc. Thus you’d be able to remove the home link and rename the link to your landing page. (It appears you already have a custom menu, so you can just edit the existing one under Appearance ->Menus.) See these for information on setting up a custom menu: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

Then under the portfolio2 I have project types (is that categories? there is no word for categories, only projects types and tags)

Categories apply to posts, not to projects. But just like you can create category pages for posts in the custom menu, you can also create project type pages for projects. At the moment, under Portfolio 2 you appear to have category pages. Under Appearance ->Menus, remove them and insert Project Types instead. If you don’t see the option for Project Types, click on Screen Options in the top-right and make sure it’s selected.

If we want to buy johnbwebsterdesign.com instead of wordpress.johnbwebsterdesign.com, how much is that and do you have to pray yearly?

Custom domains registered through WordPress.com start at $18 a year. You can also buy a domain from an outside registrar and then map it to your WP.com site. Mapping costs $13 a year, and then you have to pay the other registrar separately for the domain. Full info here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
