Illustratr – Image Captions not showing

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

    I am using 4 images in a thumbnail grid gallery as a menu.

    When I use the “square-tiles” type of gallery, the rollover works as intended and displays the caption of the image.

    However, in thumbnail grid, the caption does not show at all. All I get is a red box with a “+” which displays over the image.

    I changed the theme to TwentyThirteen to test and it works fine – you get a rollover from the bottom displaying the image caption just like with the square-tile type gallery.

    Can anyone help please?

    Shaun

  • Hi Shaun – I’d like to take a look at this, could you provide a link to an example of a gallery that’s not working as expected?

    (The site linked from your post isn’t on WordPress.com.)

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    Sure, are you active right now?

    If so I will switch the theme back for 10 mins just to show you…..I have been playing around with twenty fourteen all day as that bug was a bit of a game changer for me :/ I would still switch back though if you are able to offer a fix.

    ….and no, my site is self-hosted.

    Ah, you’ve found yourself in the support forums for WordPress.com, not self-hosted sites. :-)

    Illustratr isn’t yet available for self-hosted sites, so I’m not sure which theme you need help with. If it’s Twenty Fourteen, you can post in the theme’s forum on WordPress.com:

    http://wordpress.org/support/theme/twentyfourteen

    You’ll need a free WordPress.org account to post – if you don’t already have one, you can register here:

    Hi Kathryn,

    Again, thank you for the reply.

    It is indeed Illustratr that I need help with.

    Apologies if I am on the wrong forum, I will use twenty fourteen for now.

    Where did you download Illustratr?

  • Thanks for the link. Although you found the theme files there (good detective work!) it actually hasn’t been officially released yet for self-hosted sites – and we aren’t providing support yet – since the Portfolio custom post type isn’t yet available through Jetpack, and the whole Illustratr theme is based on portfolios. :-)

    Illustratr intentionally removes captions on the thumbnail grid, but this CSS should make them reappear:

    .gallery .gallery-item .gallery-caption {
       clip: auto;
       position: relative !important
    }

    Don’t edit the theme files directly, otherwise your changes will be overwritten when the theme is updated.

    An easy way to add custom CSS is to install the Jetpack plugin and activate the Custom CSS module. You’ll then add your custom CSS in the new stylesheet editor that’ll appear in your dashboard, under Appearance > Edit CSS.

    As alternatives, you could either install a standalone custom CSS plugin, or create a child theme.

    Thank you so much.

    This does make the captions re-appear but it also keeps the red box in tact? Is this really supposed to be there?

    On other themes, when you hover over the image, the caption rolls up from the bottom, is that not the case with Illustratr?

    I have changed my theme back so you can see what I mean.

    I really appreciate you helping me after explaining the theme is not officially supported :)

    It is – it works with the original portfolio design – but you can remove it with this CSS:

    .gallery-icon a:before, .gallery-icon a:after {
          background: none;
    }

    I really appreciate you helping me after explaining the theme is not officially supported :)

    You’re welcome. :-) We’re glad you like the theme.

    Super thanks you – it’s a very nice minimalist theme, I am sure it will be very popular :)
