Illustratr portolio featured images

Hi,
I’m trying to display thumbnails of cropped images in the portfolio in Illustratr, rather than the uncropped image set as a featured image. I’ve tried cropping the thumbnail in Media, and installing various plugins that claim to do this job, but none of them seem to work. Is this even possible?

The Illustratr theme displays scaled versions of featured images in the portfolio grid. You might be able to change this behavior with CSS customization.

This won’t work. You could crop your images prior to uploading them to the media library, but they may not appear if they aren’t of sufficient width after cropping. The Illustratr theme guide gives the following specs for portfolio featured images: “Featured Images for projects are 800 [pixels] wide by unlimited high.”
…and installing various plugins that claim to do this job, but none of them seem to work.
You can’t install plugins on a WordPress.com site.
