Illustratr theme – trying to set up the grid appearance for homepage
-
Hi there – hoping someone can help me. I am having difficulty wrapping my head around the instructions for creating a portfolio page on my new blog. I would like to have my homepage showing up as a grid, displaying all posts in a grid as per the demo for Illustratr theme. Is anyone able to provide clarification or a step by step instruction on how I can do this. thanking you in advance. Mme FF :-)

Hi there,
The first step is to create a new page, and call it Home or Welcome or whatever you like.
In the Page Attributes box, select the Portfolio Page template , and then save your page.
In your Customizer‘s Homepage Settings panel, select the page you just created as your new front page. Currently, the front-page setting is blank.
Now, be sure to add some portfolio projects under Portfolio > Add New. For each project, upload a Featured Image – this is the image that will be displayed in the grid o n the hompage. Add text and images in the post editor – this will be displayed after you click on the homepage grid to reach the individual project page.
That should get you going!
Also just a heads-up that since your site has the Premium plan, you’re also entitled to live-chat and email support, accessible here:
https://wordpress.com/help/contact
You’re welcome to still post in these forums, but those other support avenues may be faster, and you’ll always get a staff reply, while the forums are a mix of staff and volunteers, and staff doesn’t answer every question.

Thank you SO much kathrynwp!! I’ll give it a whirl and go thru live-chat/email if I hit a wall. Your response has definitely clarified as I’m not very tech-savvy. LOL Kind regards, Mme FF

It worked kathrynwp! Thank you! I’ve still got a long way to go with the site but it’s beginning to fall into place and make a bit more sense. Slowly slowly :-) Thanks again, Mme FF

It’s looking good! The one thing I noticed is that your site actually seems more like a blog, and not a creative portfolio. Just keep in mind that with portfolio projects, folks can’t subscribe to your site and receive your posts by email or in the Reader. (I noticed this when I tried to subscribe to your updates myself!)
For this reason, you might want to consider a theme that is more geared for blogging, but puts the post in a similar-style grid, like Dyad 2, Baskerville 2, Rebalance, or Apostrophe, for example. Or perhaps better yet, you could go with our recently released Photo Blog theme, which is included in your Premium plan. It comes with a setup guide and video here: https://wordpress.com/theme/photo-blog
Just let me know if you have any questions about this!

Ooooooo … thanks kathrynwp – I’ll have another play around… I deleted my Blog page and put the 3 blog posts on the home page, but I don’t think I saw Photo-Blog when searching thru my themes … it looks ideal for what I am trying to achieve. thank you for keeping me in the loop. Mme FF
