So please humour me if this Q (in two parts) sounds a bit naive. Very basically and without jargon: What is WordPress for and what do its users do with it?

A blog is some sort of journal or web site that can be most anything you want it to be, how to cook, adventures in painting the house, raising the brats, my pets, there are something like 15,000,000 blogs on WordPress.COM, each a bit different from each other..

@gmmosger If I understand your question correctly, you just created an account in WordPress and but don’t know what you can use WordPress for or what WordPress gives you, correct?
In very simple and limited terms WordPress allows you to create and maintain a blog for free. A blog is a list of posts. Post is what you write and then publish. As you write on different days your list grows, your blog grows. If you think of the posts as a daily newspaper, WordPress would be the workshop where you prepare the newspaper before publishing. WordPress have all the tools to create your newspaper, your post.
I suggest this reading which tries not to be technical (tries):
The reading suggested by timethief and auxclass are very important if you decide to continue with your blog and start publishing posts.

WordPress is a web publishing system that allows anyone to publish content on the web easily with little knowledge of the inner workings of the web and without the need for any programming abilities.
It can be used to publish a blog (weblog) which can be used for virtually anything. It can be used to express opinions, talk about politics, talk about your dogs or cats, you can discuss and publish anything that interests you.
