I’m confused about Akismet
-
It says on the Akismet download page, “Upload the plugin file to your WordPress plugins directory inside of wp-content.” Can someone please tell me where is the plugins directory inside of wp-content? I’m confused about this whole process with Akismet, starting with the plugins directory inside of wp-content.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That is a wordpress.COM blog and all our wordpress.COM blogs are equipped with Akismet. There is nothing to turn on, upload or do. Akismet is working across this whole blogging platform on every blog hosted by wordpress.COM
WordPress.COM blogs do not have FTP access and do not have individual plugins.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/If you are using the wordpress.ORG codex – stop or you will become confused. wordpress.COM and wordpress.ORG software are different.

If Akismet is working automatically, do I even need to have the widget in my side panel?
-
Nope. It’s just a “bragging widget” that display how many spams are caught. Other than that it doesn’t do anything. Your wordpress.COM blog is go to go – Akismet is on the job. :)

On the Admin side of your blog find “Comments” and click. A new page will load. At the top you will see thsis:
Edit Comments
* All | * Pending (xx) | * Approved | * Spam (xx) | * Trash (xx)
Check for Spam
I hope that’s enough for you to locate the Spam links and Check for Spam link because I’m hungry and dinner is ready ..lol :D. If it isn’t then I’ll come back and make a screenshot for you after dinner.
