I'm confused! Help (please) on which version of WP to use

    Hi All,

Newbie to this forum (and to WP)

I’m a fledgling freelance copywriter with a couple of clients. Up to now, I’ve been writing my copy using GoogleDocs, which has worked out OK. However, I now want to start using some SEO optimisation tools, mainly for content analysis. I don’t need to know how a web page is performing over time or any similar metrics, I just want some readability analysis and examples of well-performing keywords that I’ve missed out of my copy. So basically I want analysis of copy BEFORE it goes live, not after.

There are a few plugins available for GoogleDocs, but they don’t seem that useful. I therefore decided to join WP, because there are plugins that I know will help me (I don’t know which ones yet, but I’m sure I’ll find them).

Unconnected to all of that, I recently bought a domain because I liked the sound of it, and no-one had thought of it yet. I bought this through Google domains, for £10. (In case you were wondering, it’s ‘whatawidget.com’.) I have no intention of using it, it just seemed like a potentially good investment.

So…. I’ve signed for WP, and I have the WP domain milesforman.wordpress.com. I also registered my purchased domin with WP, so I also have whatawidget.wordpress.com.

      BUT….

I’ve read recently that I should’ve gone with WP.org, not WP.com, as there are no plugins available on WP.com unless I sign up to a yearly subscription. I might want to do that at a later date, but I don’t see the point right now.

As I’ve mentioned, I have no interest in publishing any sites, or creating any landing pages. I just want to write articles and have them analysed. I don’t mind paying a little per month for a decent content analyser (maybe up to £10 pm), but I want one that works on non-published text, not only on live sites.

So I have a few questions:

    (1) do I need to switch to WP.org?
    (2) should I download the WP stand-alone app?
    (3) can I write copy into WP without having to build a website first?
    (4) can anyone recommend a plugin that does what I need?
    (5) what else do I need to know?

I appreciate that this is a big ask, but I’ve always found forums the best place to look for help and so I’m hoping that an experienced user will be able to guide me.

Many thanks for reading this far!

    Regards,

    Miles Forman

  • To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

If you do want to use plugins, you would need to purchase a Business Plan here, or move to a WordPress.org site.

The apps are not required, but they do help. :)

You do have to start with a site first if you intend to put content on it, but you can make that site private.

For plugin recommendations, since a Business Plan is required here, I recommend asking over at https://wordpress.org/support/forum/miscellaneous/
