I'm frustrated.
-
Blogged for years, and tried several themes, but I can’t seem to find the one that’s right for story-telling with oodles of photos. I’ve even taken a night course at the local colelge on using WordPress. Please advise. My northdakota365 blog is my baby these days, and will resume the 2wheels2lanes1camera blog hopefully this spring, rebuilding audience and interest. They are both photo blogs that carry a story (or story blogs with lots of photos). I’ve sampled, tested and tried free themes but is there a paid theme that would do better? I’m tired of spending hours trying hundreds of themes. Help me refine the selection, please.

Themes really are a hard thing to pick out, and I totally feel your frustration. Whenever I switch themes I usually spend an inordinate amount of time customize it to be just perfect — and I never feel like it is, haha.
Since yours is a photo blog, one of the most important thing about your theme needs to be how it focuses on those photos — not too many visual distractions within the theme itself. But looking at your site, it’s much more than photo blog. You’ve got lots of great writing in there as well. So something like Cubic probably isn’t a good fit because it relies too much on photos.
So keeping that in mind, here are some themes that jumped out to me:
All of these have a simpler feel that will keep your readers focused on your content — photos and writing. And most importantly, have a ‘blank’ palate so that all your photos will look great, no clashing with visual elements built into the theme. Some are free, some are premium – that distinction doesn’t always make a theme ‘better’ for your sites needs.

Alex…you’ve given me some good direction. Trying nearly 200 themes, one at a time is a challenge, but your advice is golden. Thank you.

That’s so nice of you to say. Thanks!
Let me know if you have any questions about customizing the theme you end up with. :)
