I'm having trouble locating an older post and not much luck installing archives widget.

  Install the archive widget https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/

  If you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the site any and all widgets can be added or removed here

  http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

  *Just replace NAME_OF_BLOG in that URL and click.

  Also, note that widgets have visibility settings that determine which pages they will be displayed on. See: Widget Visibility https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibility
