I'm liking my own posts for some unknown reason
-
I’m being shown as liking my last two posts, even though I didn’t hit the Like button. Any idea why this is happening or how to stop it? Thanks.
The two posts are:
I don’t think I’m doing anything differently. I used Google Chrome and post from my PC, which has Windows 10.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I am adding a modlook to the thread. So that a staff member will soon help you with this.
Thanks!

Hi whereof, that is odd. It’s hard to tell on this side what’s happening, but I’m guessing there’s either some bug in the interface, or the like option is too close to something else and getting triggered accidentally.
Would you mind un-liking them to see if the like comes back again?
Then please be mindful of what steps you’re taking within WordPress after that. Do you view it in a reader? Do you view the email? Are you tapping anything?
If they don’t come back, continue being mindful re: how you’re interacting with your post next time you publish one. Send us all the details you can. If we can duplicate the issue we can likely resolve it.
Thanks in advance.

First, thanks to vinithake for bring this to the staff’s attention.
As requested, I unliked one of the posts. This one:
That changed the button from “Liked” to “Like”, which is expected, but didn’t remove my image. It also didn’t change the number of likes from 3 to 2, which it should have. A refresh didn’t change anything. I saved a screenshot of this if you want it (I don’t see a way to attach it to this response).
I then went to an earlier post that didn’t have the problem:
The 78 (?) Quarantine Players Present Three Speeches from Shakespeare
I clicked on the Like button, a blank window popped up momentarily, then disappeared. The Like button changed to “Liked” and the note says “You and another blogger liked this”. But my gravatar image doesn’t appear. Maybe that’s normal. I saved a screenshot of this too if you want it. (On the page that shows a list of posts, it says 1 blogger liked this. So it isn’t counting me. Maybe that’s normal too.)
My regular procedure (all done through Chrome on my PC) after I publish something is:
1) Archive the email from WordPress in Microsoft Outlook.
2) Update the post to put the text in bold (I don’t like text in the emails to be in bold but I do like the posts to be)
3) I either view the post alone, on its own page, to see what it looks like, or click on the blog’s address to see. I don’t click on the email or anything on the blog. That’s when I see that I’ve somehow liked the post.If you need any more information or want the screenshots, please let me know. Thanks for your help.

That is definitely odd.
First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.
-
I forgot to note the Chrome version before going to that Browse Happy site. When I updated, it put in place 81.0.4044.129 (Official Build) (64-bit). I don’t think my Chrome was out of date before that, but I’m not positive.
I went to the blog. One of the two posts that had the problem — the one I didn’t unlike — has the “Liked” button, shows my gravatar and says “you and three other bloggers” liked it. That didn’t change after downloading Chrome.
The second post with the problem — the one I did unlike –now looks the way it did before the unlike: it has the “Liked” button again, shows my gravatar and says “you and two other bloggers” liked it. The problem where it showed the “Like” button — because I had unliked it — but showed my gravatar at the same time is no longer there.
The other post, which never had the problem, and which I did a “Like” for earlier today, now has a “Like” button and no longer shows me as liking the post. Before the download, it showed I liked the post but didn’t show my gravatar.
Next I removed all the extensions and restarted Chrome. Nothing changed.
The latest Firefox (76.0 64-bit) shows the three posts the same way.
The next time I post something, I’ll try to remember to use Firefox instead of Chrome.
Please let me know if you need more information.

Thank you for all the information.
Do let us know if this happens again. Also, have you checked if you’re able to reproduce this connected to a different internet source? For example, your mobile connection? -
You’re very welcome (I’m too old to say “no problem”).
I’ll try a different browser and also from my phone or tablet and let you know if it happens or not.

Ok, I put up a new post using Firefox 76.0 on my PC. I forgot to clear cache and cookies before I did it. After I published it, I used the link provided to visit the post.
Same problem: It says I like the post (even though I didn’t click on Like).
Then I edited the post to put it in bold:
Next time I’ll use my phone or tablet (both Android) to publish.
-
I put up another one, this time using Firefox to write it and my Android tablet to publish it. Same problem occurred.
-
So it appears that as soon as I publish a post, it is immediately marked as “Liked” by me. The hardware, operating system and browser don’t seem to matter.
One thing to note is that I’m still using the old editor. I tried the block editor and found it too complicated for my needs. Maybe I’ll use the block editor next time.
Another variable is the theme. I’m using the old Twenty Eleven theme. Maybe I should try a newer one.
-
Hi there,
I see you also follow your own site. That shouldn’t be an issue, but can you please check if unfollowing your site makes any difference?
Your theme wouldn’t be related here, as likes are something that function completely separately from the theme, but I’d be interested to see if using the block editor makes any difference.
If those two ideas also don’t make any difference, we’d like to try publishing a post on your site, as you, from our end, to see if that still triggers the auto-like behaviour. Would it be okay with you if we tried that?
-
I used the block editor on this one. It didn’t fix the problem.
I did notice that in the email I got, there was nothing next to the Likes button. Maybe that’s normal. When I went back and looked at the post, it showed me as liking it.
Next thing I’ll do is stop following my posts, as mentioned above.
By the way, is there an easy way to revert to the “classic” editor?

-
The suggestion above to unfollow my own blog did the trick. It doesn’t say I liked the post now.
It’s still not clear why this suddenly became an issue on April 25th.
Is there a way to get the email WordPress generates when I publish something, without following the blog?
-
Odd, I recommend following your site with an email address not connected to your account for now.
Meanwhile, we’ll look into this!
-
As suggested, I tried following my blog with an email address not associated with the blog. But the software wouldn’t let me enter a different address. It automatically used my current address.
I then logged off and tried again. This time it took me to the page below:
The information on the page is inconsistent. It says I’m following with the different address, but also that I’m not following.

———————-I published a new post today:
I did not get an email at the new address I entered, so it appears I’m not following the blog.
(Fortunately, someone who follows the blog is now sending me copies of the missing email)

It was a valid one. If you send me an email at my account’s email address, I’ll send it back.
