I’m looking for a free theme for an author website
-
Hi,
I’m setting up an author website, ready for when my forthcoming book is published. All the current free themes seem over the top.
I’ve been playing with various themes, and nothing so far is what I want, so suggestions would be very welcome.
Alternatively, can I use the old theme I use on my other blog, The Cheesesellers Wife? and how?
Thanks,
Kim
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Thank you! But unfortunately the first two of these are Community Themes, which need a business account. I’m an poet – we cant afford Business plans!
The other three do not turn up on a search of themes – perhaps they have been recently withdrawn?
Are there any other suggestions?

Hi there @kimwhysall apologies for any confusion. That previous reply was a spammer trying to appear as a legitimate reply (they were hiding a URL for their spam site in their reply) so we have removed it and banned that user account.
On WordPress.com we don’t often have themes that are for a specific niche like an “Author Website” but instead offer themes that are flexible enough to be used for any kind of site (via our customization tools) instead.
Out of curiosity, Do you happen to have any other author sites that you are drawing inspiration from or trying to emulate? What kind of content do you plan to offer on your site? Primarily as a blog, or to promote your books, or both?
Thanks for the additional info!

(EEK, I clicked on the links in that post)
One example I like is https://benbanyard.wordpress.com/
I’d be doing both blogging and promoting my first poetry chapbook. I could always use the twenty thirteen theme, but was looking for something a bit different, as my main poetry blog uses that theme.

Hi again,
I would not worry about the links since they went to a legitimate site. They were posting their site URL in the forums here (in a sneaky way) in the hopes it will increase it’s visibility in Google searches. We try and remove ’em as soon as we see ’em though!
One example I like is https://benbanyard.wordpress.com/
That site is using an older theme that has been retired, but I thought I’d suggest a few themes that are not exactly the same, but have a similar feeling, and use typography that looks really nice when you are displaying lots of written text on your site:
It’s also worth noting that our newer themes make full use of the block editor so that you can customize them to a much greater extent that was possible in the past. For example you can see in this webinar that we took the last theme on that list (Zoologist) and created a custom homepage without using any code, all drag and drop tools:
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you, you have been very helpful. I will check out those themes, and the webinar on customization.
It’s about time I got to grips with the full functionality of the block editor. My main blob is still on Twenty Thirteen. :)
