  I’m looking to work on a new website that will eventually take the domain from our current website. I’m not sure how I sign up for a new premium account without breaking my current website. I won’t be ready to transfer for a couple weeks and need the current site to be operational during this time. Thanks all!

  Not a problem at all.

  To use your domain hosted elsewhere with your WordPress.com site, when you are ready, change the domain nameservers at your domain host, and point them to WordPress.com nameservers.

  You will also need to purchase the mapping subscription upgrade via one of the paid plans so that you can map your domain over to your WordPress.com site.

  I won’t be ready to transfer for a couple weeks and need the current site to be operational during this time.

  That’s okay. Each WordPress.com site has a free address, which means you can start importing content, choosing a theme and customising your new site straight away. Once everything is set up how you would like on this end, the domain can be mapped to transferred to WordPress.com.
