I’m new at this…what is the difference between a page and a post?

  I thought a post would be part of a page…but the post doesn’t show up on the page–it goes to archives. So what is a post, anyway? Do I just keep adding to the page? Does anyone have a resource for blog 101? And I mean 101, not something with a lot of geekspeak! Help!
