I’m new -Help with categories

I’m less than a week into my blog adventure, just wanted to clarify whether all new posts default into ‘Home’ or do I put them into a category and then set that up as ‘home’? apologies if this posted in the wrong forum. I have set one Category up called ‘Headlines’ but not sure if this is any use to me – is it as effective not to have categories and just set up pages?
Any help or feedback much appreciated.

All new posts, even uncategorized ones, will go on your main blog.
Do NOT set up pages instead of posts; you will slaughter your search engine rankings that way.

You can set up the default category in Settings > Writing

You can change the category of any post at any time.
Categories and tags are very useful in grouping posts.
