I’m new to all of this and so confused

How do I get my categories to post and do I need widgets to add sub-categories? Are there step by step directions for dummies I am missing? Thank you.

Categories will only show up once you assign them to at least one post. The same is true for tags.

To make subcategories, you can go to posts > categories and then create your categories and sub categories. If you are creating a subcategory, then you choose the parent category from the pulldown when you create it.

You can also create categories on the fly in the post editor by clicking on the add new category link at the bottom of the category pane. Again, there will be a pulldown where you can assign the parent category if you are creating a subcategory.

I might also suggest that you link your blog to your username as outlined in the sticky thread at the top of the forum called, 8 things… and that way we do not have to constantly ask for a link to your wordpress.COM blog to be able to take a look at things if we have to. It will save your time and ours. If you do not want your username linked to your blog, that is fine, but remember to provide the URL to your blog each time you ask a question here, or we will just keep asking for it.

I just saw that….updated my info…now I’ll see if I got that at least to work! So I have to put something in post….but when I did that it showed up on my home page introduction. What I’m trying to do is provide a variety of info in the category sidebars. I don’t want to fill my home page with a bunch of paragraphs. I currently have 2 categories that are pending and when I try to edit them they don’t give me a publish key and they just aren’t there in the sidebar. Thank you so much!

All posts will show on the main blog page regardless. If you are looking to have more control over what your viewers see and how they see it, you might want to think about a static front page where you can list the categories that you want them to view. Do note that having a static front page will lower your search engine page rank since the search engines look mostly at the main page, which in the case of a static front page seldom changes. See the following link on static front pages.

That may be exactly what I want…I’ll look at it more later when I have some more time. Thank you so much.

    You’re very welcome.

What I'm trying to do is provide a variety of info in the category sidebars.

If the information you want to display is permanent, (or does not change often), then you might want to organize it on pages and use a pages widget to allow your readers to access it as needed. Then you could post current news, insights, topical issues or whatever on your main (posting) page.

By permanent information, I mean things like “contact information for finding help,” “definitions of terms,” “books as resources,” “community resources,” and so on.
