I'm not renwing my service and a suggtion
-
TL;DR: i’m not happy with the block editor, moving my weblog is a cheaper option.
Wordpress sent me a reminder that my Premium service will expire in 1 day, i’m not going to renew it, i already moved my weblog to another hosting company, something i didn’t want to do but after what happened to the classic editor i’m not going to wait for its complete removal.
When i joined WordPress.com i planned to stay here for years, i don’t want to deal with the hosting issues or backup or security and WordPress let me focus on writing, i don’t need much from WordPress, the classic editor was more than enough for my needs.
I have nothing against the Block Editor, it’s not a writing editor but a website building editor, it provide a lot of things that i don’t want or need, i thought i’ll use wp-admin to keep using the classic editor, days later the Add New button is changed to go by default to the Block Editor, there is an arrow to choose the classic editor … this what made me decide to move.
I felt this little change is hostile and made to discourage people from using the classic editor.
Some people pointed out that i can use a plugin, that needs business plan which costs with the domain $320 a year, i will not pay that much just to use one plugin, my current hosting+domain costs only $53 and allow me to edit themes and use plugins.
The Premium plan i paid for costs $116, it does not allow me to use plugins.
I have a suggestion and i feel it’s futile to write it here but here goes, i hope i’m wrong:
- Allow people to set a default editor so when they press Add New button it takes them to choosed editor.
- Or allow people with Personal and Premium plans to use one plugin.
I would like to go back to WordPress.com because i don’t want to deal with hosting and domain issues, but without the classic editor this will not happen, i will never use the Block editor and i know it have Classic block, this solve nothing, i’ve been using WordPress since 2004, i don’t want to learn a new editor that provide nothing i need or want.

Before you go, I wanted to point out that the classic editor is still available in wp-admin if you wish. To access that, you will want to set your account to “Show advanced dashboard pages” here: https://wordpress.com/me/account
Just click the option shown in my screenshot here: https://d.pr/i/QqCdQz
Once you have turned on that option, you can visit your list of posts and instead of seeing the WordPress.com admin view, you will see the more advanced “wp-admin” view. On that page you can access the classic editor via the options shown in this screenshot: https://d.pr/i/pbLBUS
It’s true that the routing for buttons like the “Add Post” button may go to the newer editor as that is the one that most WordPress.com users prefer, but if you navigate to wp-admin, you can start a new page or post in the classic editor natively.
I have nothing against the Block Editor, it’s not a writing editor but a website building editor, it provide a lot of things that i don’t want or need
We derive our block editor from the open source WordPress project (the free version that is offered on other hosts) so we are not in direct control of development, but what you mention is something that the team there is aware of, and it is my understanding they are considering how to implement a more focused “writing mode” that is more in line with what folks miss about the classic editor. It was terrible for building page layouts, but great if all you wanted to do was “just write”
You may wish to consider leaving feedback for the team here, since the block editor is a community project anyone can participate and help shape the future of WordPress: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/32641
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
