I'm not seeing "Add Comment" on my site

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I realized that comment functionality is not visible on my site. What can be wrong, do you know?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, were comments available on your site at one point? If so, can you please link to such a post? Thanks.

To Staff, this is another one of those post we get from time to time where the post has been duplicated somehow but it is not a duplicate post and no number is appended to the “duplicate” post. Please see this screenshot. thanks FYI

Is it possible that you’ve accidentally turned off commenting globally on your site?

  • Hi –

The discussion settings look in order for comments to work.

Is the missing comment in the spam?
    https://notlar11.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?comment_status=spam

The comment that has been linked to is working, I can see it was left by Berk on 13 Temmuz 2018, 14:25

    What do you see ?

  • Unknown's avatar

staff-zinnia – None of the recent posts on the site have an open comment box available. I took a quick look at some posts as far back as June 2018.

staff-zinnia I’m not seeing comments functionality in most posts. I went back a few months and I saw only two posts with comments open.

I see that on the Post Settings side bar, under Discussion, “Allow comments” is not checked. That’s weird, because in my Settings I allowed comments. Do I need to check “Allow comments” every time I post?

Does this mean I have to go back and manually check this box for each post? What happened?

staff-zinnia There is no missing comments as far as I’m aware.

The comment box is not showing in the majority of posts because “allow comments” box is not checked. I was not even aware that I had to individually allow each post for comments by checking “allow comments”.

  • Unknown's avatar

I went ahead and checked the allow comments box for most recent posts.

Do you know what happened? Is “allow comments” checkbox a new addition? Why is it not checked as default?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello again, sorry for the delay.

Commenting is normally ON by default. It seems like it got changed on your site at some point, but only Staff can confirm if they see that in your site activity.

When you change the Discussion setting to allow comments, that will affect all NEW posts you publish.

For posts that have already been published you can bulk edit your posts in WP Admin Posts* dashboard by selecting multiple posts and Edit in the dropdown menu on the top of the column, then Apply. Then change the Comment setting to “Allow” and click the Update button. https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/#bulk-edit

  • Hi folks, @ justjennifer is correct; these can be bulk edited.

That said, unless you’ve already bulk edited these posts, all of the ones I can see have comments on, even if they weren’t modified recently. Do you still need help with this, @zeynel1?

I wanted to note too, the comments don’t show on the blog page in this theme. They do show on individual posts, though:

@supernovia Yes, I did bulk editing and activated comments. Since you are Staff, can you see what happened, why did this happen? Did I change a setting without knowing? Is there a way you can find out, if you have time? I posted my discussions settings above.

I think you mean that, on the main page (notlar1.com) comment boxes do not show. Right? But it indicates if there is a comment by showing the number of comments. And also there is a button that says “leave a comment”. So users can leave a comment if they want to even on the main page?

    Thanks for the help.

  • Unknown's avatar

@justjennifer Thanks. I used bulk edit as you explained and all posts now should have comments activated again. But I still would like to know what happened so that I’m more careful in the future.

Hello again, As I mentioned, only Staff have access to that kind of information. I’m a volunteer, so do not have.

Regardless, as long as “comments allowed” is now set in your Discussion settings and you’ve bulk edited your already published posts to allow comments, you should be all set. If by some strange accident it happens again, you’ve got the information you need to deal with it. :)
