I'm not seeing the dashboard items displayed in help examples

  I’ve looked in the support on wordpress.com, but I’m not seeing the sidebar items shown. Is it the theme? I’m logged in on the admin page, but only have a few items: Stats, plan, Publish, blog posts, pages… etc, starting at the top. Under ‘pages’ in a new window for instance, I have the two rows of editing tools, but no buttons above those rows for ‘add media’ ‘add poll’ or ‘add contact form’ Specifically, I was trying to add a contact form, but not finding a way to do it.
