I'm on the free plan. I can't figure out how to get plugins to work.

Whenever I click on ‘plugins’ the only thing I see is a screen that mentions something about three online sales platforms, and an upgrade link. Does WP no longer support plugins for free accounts? This one thing has caused me hours of frustration.

Plugins can’t be installed on a WordPress.com hosted site, but a lot of plug-in functionality is already built in: http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
If there’s a particular plugin you have in mind, you might want to visit the idea forum and suggest that the plugin be added: https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/#plugin-requests
If you really need the plugin(s), consider moving to a self-hosted installation of WordPress. You’ll need to register a domain, buy hosting, and set up your site using the free software from WordPress.org: https://wordpress.org/
