I'm receiving subscription notifications for my own site, I'm not subscribing

  • Unknown's avatar

I keep receiving notifications that I have subscribed to my own site. I delete the subscription only for it to happen again a week later. On the advice of a WP guy, I changed my email address and password. Except it is happening again and in the process lost the person who was helping me.Can anyone help please?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Shirlee,

Just to make sure I understand what’s going on, you are getting those notifications but you aren’t doing anything to follow or subscribe to your site, right?

Since you deleted the subscription, it’s a bit hard to say exactly what’s going on. If this happens again, can you please leave the subscription as it is and then let me know? That will help me investigate this for you.

Yes Rachel, that’s correct. It started a some weeks ago.
I delete it and about a week later it happened again. About 4 times since then.
On the advice of the WP ‘Happiness Engineer’ I was speaking with about the WP App. on my phone, I changed my passwords on both my WP accounts and the addresses. Then I had issues with my App. due to the changes, so I downloaded it again and consequently lost the conversation I was having, which is a shame was giving me invaluable help and I hate to just vanish without thanking him..

Thanks for your reply. As soon as it happens again and I am sure it will, I’ll let you know.

    Hi Shirlee,

If you’d like to get back in touch with the app support folks, you can head back to the help & support section in your app and start up a new conversation there. :) Of course, I’m happy to keep helping you with this subscription issue here!

Thanks for the advice. I am more than happy to stay with you. Besides the fact it is much easier to communicate via the website than by phone!!!

Seriously though. I did contact the App support people and asked if they could put me back in contact with Daniel (surname withheld) the guy I was dealing with. I haven’t heard back from them, so I guess the answer is in the negative
He put all the Stats from the Blog on to my website for me. The guy who transferred it all told me he couldn’t do that. Daniel also gave me the link to the plug-in so I could transfer my subscribers, but I couldn’t open it on my phone. If you have that it will be great.

I am wondering if I can now revert to my original password and email address, seeing as to how it made no difference changing it. ? Though maybe I should stay with the status quo for now.

I believe David was probably linking you to Jetpack:

    http://jetpack.me/

And here’s our guide to do the actual transfer:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/

You could change your password again, essentially reverting, but it’s good to change your password every once in a while. Up to you! :)

Do you remember who told they couldn’t transfer your stats? I can check in with them and make sure they’ve found the right resources to do this.

Thanks Shawna. Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.

    Thank you for your help.

I think I will like to change my password back to what it was once I get this subscription issue sorted out. I don’t recall where Daniel said where the subscription came from but it certainly wasn’t Sydney. Because I had to change the App I lost the thread. It was unsubscribed from Queensland, which was me as I was on holiday. He couldn’t see what had happened. It was happening at about weekly intervals, which should make it Tuesday or Wednesday

Daniel transferred my Stats. I won’t bother now with the subscribers though thanks for the help. I sent emails to email subscribers. I went through all the WOP subscribers and most had email addresses so I wrote to them I also posted as a post the fact I was moving every day for 2 weeks

I certainly wasn’t happy that I lost them. I think the so-called expert who transferred everything hadn’t done it before. I know he paid some money to WP to transfer ‘things’ but was told that as WP weren’t hosting it couldn’t be done. That’s what he told me anyhow. Now I see he was wrong. I will contact him.

The address will do as is. I had an issue with the App when I changed the password and had to delete it and re-download.

Thanks again. Fingers crossed you don’t need to hear from me again.

I’m glad this is all sorted out now. :)

Let me know if there’s something else I can help with!

  • Unknown's avatar

Not sure that is is all sorted out Shawna, but I will let it go for now.
I am hoping there was some sort of WP glitch that was causing ‘me’ to subscribe to my own site.
A weekend and a half ago I changed my address and password and received a subscription email. Since unsubscribing from that, so far nothing so maybe, it’s over.

Thank you and Rachel for your help and if it happens again I’ll set the help question up again

  • Unknown's avatar

It does seem like that triggered it somehow. Definitely let us know if you see this again!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks. I know this is off topic and I have sent a question in about it.

I have paid for two years ‘automatic transfer’ from my old Blog to my Website and I access the old Stats via WP.com. Do you know if in order to access that if i will have to keep on paying.?

The old Stats are far better than the new. Clearer, concise and much easier to read

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope! The site redirect does not affect your stats. It just moves people from jewsdownunder.wordpress.com to http://www.jewsdownunder.com.

If you stop renewing this upgrade and someone visits jewsdownunder.wordpress.com they will not be forwarded on to your actual site. They’ll see the site you view here (but without the customization options):

    https://jewsdownunder.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php

Does that clear things up? Let me know if you have any more questions!

  • Unknown's avatar

    That’s fine.

Thank YOU SO MUCH for ALL your help. It’s really appreciated.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m happy to help! Let me know if I can do anything else!

  • Unknown's avatar

    That’s a dangerous comment Shawna.

Just kidding. I think I have it all for now. Thanks for everything.

Today at 5.55am Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time (AEDST) I

received and email again informing me I have ‘subscribed ‘ again’

I have the email and this time I HAVEN’T unsubscribed.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there!

I’m seeing a day old subscription your site. You should see that here:

    https://wordpress.com/following/edit/

One thing you could do to help prevent this from continuing to happen is change your default subscription settings. This way if you get subscribed to your site again, you won’t get emails for your posts:

    https://wordpress.com/me/notifications

  • Unknown's avatar

Point is why has that started happening only recently?

I’ve had a break since January and now this again?

At least now I can change back to my old password

  • Unknown's avatar

Problem is too, if I change my settings that will interfere with sites I follow

  • Unknown's avatar

Probably the best solution then is to set the email frequency for your own site to “never” and just leave the subscription added to your site.

    Does that work for you?
