I'm receiving subscription notifications for my own site, I'm not subscribing

The point is “WHY IS IT HAPPENING?”
There has to be some sort of a glitch somewhere.

  • Unknown's avatar

From what I can tell, there’s no bug happening. If you had more information about when this gets triggered, like every time you comment on one of your posts you get subscribed again, I could look into it further. But at this point, there’s no way for me to recreate the issue you’re having.

The best I can do is give you a way to work around it.

It can’t be when I post a comment, as it hasn’t happened since January and I’ve posted many since then.

It’s odd as I have 3 WP IDs. My original which is as old as WP and the other two I’ve had since starting the Blog in 2013.

I just had a thought and I checked it out. It happened around the time I had a new WP subscriber a few days ago. The previous times it happened were in January, when I picked up two. This is separate from email subscribers.??

  • Unknown's avatar

Let’s leave this again for a while to see what happens. Trouble is more people subscribe via email than WP.

I do have a question though which is way off topic here.

I am getting two ‘places’ listed as countries on my stats which don’t exist. Who do I contact about this please? If you know that is.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for mentioning the connection with your new followers. I’ve found a similar report with Jetpack where the site owner gets added as a follower every time a new follower is added:

    https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/1682

I’ve added a link to this thread there.

Can you tell me what these places are?

  • Unknown's avatar

I was beginning to think you might be wondering if I’d lost it!!!
Thanks for the link. Do you want me to stay here or to go there, if you want to combine the two?

The first has been coming up for a while and has caused quite a stir and it is the State of Palestine. The is no such place. The UN Security Council in Dec 2014 said No to establishing the Palestinian state within a time frame of no more than three years. I won’t go into the technicalities.

The other appeared just this week and is the EU – European Union. To the best of my recollection some 24 countries are members of the EU.

No need to post to the Github link! We’ll keep you posted in this thread on the subscription issue.

It looks like this is referred to as “Palestinian Territories” on the stats page. Is that what you’re seeing as well? We source the country information from the Unicode Common Locale Data Repository:

    http://cldr.unicode.org/

This is updated and released twice a year so it’s possible that it’s in the process of being updated.

The EU country code will appear when a user visits your site from somewhere that our geolocation service believes to be in the European Union but isn’t exactly sure what country.

    Hi @sfinn2013,

I was incorrect earlier regarding the Unicode Common Locale Data Repository. It looks like we source the country codes from here:

    http://dev.maxmind.com/geoip/legacy/codes/iso3166/

This still uses the term “Palestinian Territory.”

  • Unknown's avatar

Ah, ah. “Palestinian Territory.” Now that’s interesting.

    Thanks Jeremy

I wrote to an address I found a couple of months ago about this and it looks like it has been corrected after checking my stats. Thanks. Just checked the ‘old stats’ too.

Until a couple of days ago I’d never seen an EU pop up. I always look at countries, I find it interesting.

I am going to ask on my Facebook pages for someone who has a WP account, to subscribe to my site so we can see if the problem is replicated. If they sign up with an address which is registered at WP does that do the trick?

I’m not sure what you are asking here, could you clarify? Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Not asking anything.
We have a problem, seems I am not alone.

We think it might occur when a person subscribes using their WP account. I am going to try to replicate it.

I have been dealing with Shawna Roberts.

  • Unknown's avatar

Shawna is off for a bit, and we didn’t want you to have to wait until she returned.

If you can replicate the problem and report back that would be great.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry if my last comment sounded a bit off, reading back it sounds it and wasn’t intended to be.

Let’s hope I can replicate the problem. It might be a wild idea but if it works at least I will know what it is, so will WordPress. Surely just two of us can’t be the only people with the problem?

Just checking…if a person signs up for an email subscription to my site using an address registered with WP, does that automatically make them a WP subscriber please.?

Good question! I tested this, and even if a user signs up by e-mail when they are logged out of WordPress, they will show up as a WordPress.com follower if they use an e-mail address connected to a WordPress.com account.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks.
I left a message on my FB page for someone with a WP account to contact me, but it just dawned on me I can ask a guy I am helping with his WP Blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

I found only one person I know with a WP account. He registered for a subscription. Unfortunately it only registered him for an email one and not a WP one. He logged in first too.

Someone else told me they would too so I’ll chase him up.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sounds good. Thanks for the update.

  • Unknown's avatar

    LIZ…………………….I GOT IT.

Someone subscribed as an email follower with the address he has registered at WP and I was subscribed at the exact same moment.

I presume it’s a WP account. It’s the same address he is registered as a Contributor with.

Thanks for the extra research. We’ve reported this behavior and will let you know if/when we have an update.
