I’m switching from ipage to your premium hosting plan, did it work? Basically I signed up for the premium trail, gave you my site address, but I don’t think the data transferred and I don’t know if ipage is still my host. I need some confirmation and I apologize for not having any real idea what I’m doing.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I see that you did sign up for the free trial of WordPress.com. In order for all your data to be transferred you will have to Export your iPage site and Import that into your WordPress.com site. I see you have two:
http://randomencounterzdotcom.wordpress.com/
http://randomencounterzdotcom1.wordpress.com/Import the site into the one you want to use. If you want to map your existing domain: random-encounterz.com to your WordPress.com site, please go to your registrar and change the nameservers to us:
- NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
Then add the Domain Mapping upgrade (which is included in the Premium upgrade). Please view the guide below for more information:
Let me know if you have any questions with this!
-
Alright, I believe I’ve done everything on the list, but some of my archived comics appear to be missing. Is there any relation between that and changing the name servers?
-
Okay, I’ve figured out that I needed to export the mysql databases and I’ve done that. There’s a nice post I found here:
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/content-missing-after-host-change
Now where and how do I import them into wordpress.com?
-
Sorry for adding more and more questions, but I don’t appear to have the premium site options even though I’ve got the trial.

You can do that by importing the xml file when you go to Tools > Import in your Dashboard.

premium site options even though I’ve got the trial.
Let me know which site you want it on:
http://randomencounterzdotcom.wordpress.com/ http://randomencounterzdotcom1.wordpress.com/

I see that you are linking to:
http://www.random-encounterz.com/
However, that is a WordPress.org site. Please note that WordPress.com Premium is for WordPress.com sites only.
You can make your site on any of the following:
http://randomencounterzdotcom.wordpress.com/ http://randomencounterzdotcom1.wordpress.com/
Then, you can map your domain: random-encounterz.com to any of the sites above. This means that whenever you go to your WordPress.com site, you will automatically be redirected to random-encounterz.com.
Please note that a domain name is a name used to identify a particular website on the internet. Your site’s domain name is like your mailing address. Your domain exists independently of your site, so even if you cancel your domain, all the content on your site remains unchanged. Therefore, if anything were to happen to your domain (for e.g. you forget to renew it), you can still find all your content at the *wordpress.com site as long as the primary domain is updated.
You can find more information about domains here.

I’d like the premium upgrade for
http://randomencounterzdotcom.wordpress.com/
I’ve mapped the domain there but none of my plugins and my theme didn’t import with the rest. I’m thinking that’s because it thinks I only have the basic stuff.

Please note that plugins are not allowed on WordPress.com for security reasons, but we do have a lot of built-in features that were inspired by popular plugins. You can search our support site via this link:
For any features on WordPress.com, the support page will explain how to set it up.
If you are wondering how WordPress.com differs from WordPress.org, this support article explains the distinction:
Also, themes do not transfer over as well, so you would have to apply a theme from our theme showcase here:
Would this be okay with you? If it is, then I will add the Premium upgrade for you.
Cheers!

Unbelievable. I’m trying to make an online comic site that will hopefully turn into a small business and I can’t have plugins? That fact is absolutely nowhere to be found in your sales stuff. And my other hosting option is already down… How am I supposed to customize my site without plugins or a theme? Can I host from wordpress.org?
-
You can customize your theme as the WordPress.com Premium upgrade includes the Custom Design upgrade. You can apply custom fonts/colors and edit CSS. But, you would have to apply one of the themes in our showcase. Take a look at the links to see how you can customize your theme.
As for plugins we have multiple widgets inspired by popular plugins. Which plugins are a necessity for you? I can see if we have those, or if we have something similar to it.
Can I host from wordpress.org?
No. WordPress.com is a host, but there are some limitations. WordPress.org is a self-hosted version, so you would have to find a new host.
Take a look at the guide above for more information.

Thanks for being so patient with me. What we had before was the comic press theme with comic easel plugins. That did most of the work but we also had jetpack, CEO by yoast, a couple plugins to help with facebook meta data… Darn I reall wish I had a list. Is there somewhere in the export file I have that would tell me what we were using?
-
Hi there,
Unfortunately, I don’t have access to your files on WordPress.org so I wouldn’t be able to tell you which plugins you used before. But, looking at the list you gave me, there isn’t anything there that you wouldn’t have with WordPress.com.
For a comic-related theme, I would take a look at Panel:
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/panel/
It was specifically made for comics, so it may be a great theme for you.
Please note that Jetpack is a plugin that brings over many of the features on WordPress.com to WordPress.org so you will be all set with that!
As for SEO by Yoast, since you are now with WordPress.com you already have great SEO, so I don’t think that plugin would be necessary. Take a look at these articles to see why:
http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/03/22/seo-on-wordpress-com/
http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/seo-and-your-blog/For Facebook, you can share your posts automatically using Facebook Publicize:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/
You can integrate your blog with Facebook using this guide:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/facebook-integration/
That will include Facebook embeds, badges, likes, and commenting.
Cheers!

Thank you so much. It’s time for me to go to bed, but I’ll check over this with ‘the boss’ tomorrow and I’ll see what we can do from here.
-
Actually, can you go ahead and upgrade
http://randomencounterzdotcom.wordpress.com/
to the premium package? I guess I’m not going to bed yet :P

Hi there,
I had a quick question – can you walk me through the process of how you were able to first add the Premium Trial upgrade to your site:
ww.random-encounterz.com?
That would be very helpful!
Thank you!
