I'm thinking about registering my site, but have questions first

  • Unknown's avatar

I am thinking about perhaps registering my site for $18, but after reading all the info on it, I have a few questions first, before I decide.

    1) Is it an automatic renew thing or not? I see a contradiction in info on this. On the Domain Expiration page under the first paragraph heading it states that there is an option to choose “auto-renew” if one chooses. It also strongly urges users to renew their domains in a timely fashion which to me, means that the “auto-renew” is optional. However, in the FAQ page about Payment for this very thing, it states that “auto renew” is mandatory, but one can cancel anytime. I find this contradiction disturbing because I don’t want auto-renew and I don’t trust the promise of canceling. (That never works).

    2) I read that if I registered my site that all my contact info (name, email, home address and probably my phone number, work place, driver’s license and everything else including my financial info) is handed out to everybody with an internet connection automatically. The documentation states that I can choose to register privately, but later it says it costs $8.00. Is that $8 on top of the $18?

    3) I see that everything is processed through PayPal, that’s a potential problem in and of itself. Does Paypal really need to be involved?

    Thank you,
    Anon

First of all Timethief, thank you for fixing it up, but just because you are well versed in forums and live on them (something I will never want for myself) doesn’t mean you can take a condescending tone.
I already subscribed to the thread when I posted, that much I figured out.
It isn’t all that important whether I register or not. For me, it’s more of a curiosity.

  • 1. Auto renew is set up on all purchases. But yes, it can be turned off. Trusting that is up to you or not.

    2. ICANN regulations require registrant data for domain registrations. There is nothing we, or any domain registrar can do about this. Paying for domain registration privacy is the only way around this.

    3. Paypal is our payment processing partner. While you do not have to have a paypal account in order to make a credit card payment, paypal will still be the ones doing the processing.

    Thank you for responding Rootjosh.
I’m still not clear on number one. Is one able to turn off or choose not to have auto-renew or does one have to go through a cancellation process and pray that it works?

I’m not happy about having to pay extra for my safety, but I would do so anyway.

At this point though, I’m thinking it is not worth registering my site yet.

  • You are able to turn auto-renewal off. But it is set up by default initially when you purchase an upgrade.

Ah, I see, thank you Rootjosh.

That is a plus. The deal killer for me right now is the extra cost for security and no real guarantees of it either. Also, at this stage, I don’t really feel my site is worth the bother. Perhaps later down the road, but not right now.

    Thank you.
