    I just want to build the website, I’ll figure out where to host it later.

    You need a host in the first place to have somewhere to build a website in the second place. You can always start here for free.

    In that case, I think you are on the right platform. WordPress.com is the best place to get your website started.

    All WordPress.com sites including the free sites with a subdomain option come with premium hosting, security, and backups included. You can upgrade to a custom domain, like example.com as and when you feel ready for it.

    WordPress.com provides a free WordPress.com subdomain(example.wordpress.com/example.blog.com etc…) for you when you create your site with them. You can use that to build your site by choosing a theme, adding content etc.. Get your site up and running. As you mentioned in the post above, here with the WordPress.com subdomain option you can build your website first and then choose decide if you wish to remain hosted with WordPress.com or move out to a third-party host.
