I’m wanting to point my domain away from WordPress as I no longer use it

    Hello,

I need to point my domain away from WordPress to another host as I haven’t used my WP site in years and am creating a new website elsewhere. I still own my domain and when I tried to point it to the new website the help team there said my domain is still with WordPress. I’ve read up on how to do this on WordPress however because I no longer have a Premium account and am not wanting to sign up and pay for another 12 months with WP when I’m moving to another provider, I don’t get the option to change where my domain goes to. Is there a way I can do this without paying for the premium site option? Thank you!

    Hi tartiemusic,

I still own my domain and when I tried to point it to the new website the help team there said my domain is still with WordPress.

Which domain are you trying to point to another host?

I noticed tartie.com.au was mapped to tartiecomau.wordpress.com but this upgrade expired back in 2017. The name servers are currently pointing to WordPress.com — could you try logging in to the account you have with Web Address Registration Pty and updating the name servers to point to your new host?

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks so much for your response. The domain I need to point away to another host is tartie.com.au

I purchased the domain through Crazy Domains and have tried to point it to another host there but when I followed the instructions, it still wasn’t working and they said it was because my domain was pointing towards WordPress. I can keep trying though….

    Thanks for your help!

  • How exactly are you trying to point the domain to another host?

If you’re trying to do it via A records/IP addresses, it won’t work, no, because your domain’s name servers are still pointed at us. This means any time someone types your domain into a browser, that browser comes to us to see where the domain should be pointing.

The problem is, the moment the mapping upgrade was removed from your account, we stopped actually hosting the DNS, so we have no information to provide to browsers that come looking for it.

To fix this, you’ll first need to log into your account at Crazy Domains and set the name servers back to theirs. Then you add your A records on their end to point to your new host. Changing the name servers can only be done at the provider where your domain is registered.

Thanks so much! That was definitely the issue as I’ve now changed the name servers from WordPress back to Crazy Domains. Thanks for your help as I’m sure this will fix the problem now. Thanks again!
