Image and text overlay in Sela theme
-
I have already visited this page, https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sela/, and was unable to figure out how to reproduce the full size image and text overlay that is featured on the front page of the Sela template.
Any tips on how to nix the “FRONT PAGE” title I have going on and add in the image and overlay elements? Thanks!

Hi Nicole,
I was asking the same question myself and accidentally stumbled upon the answer. To get the nice text overlay, you need to set a Featured Image on your static home page. But the tricky part is that the old-style WP admin page editor does not have a Featured Image option! You’ll need to use the new style page editor. When you log in, click the “My Sites” button in the upper left-hand corner, then go to Pages. From there, you can edit you page in the new-style editor and the Featured Image option is on the right-hand side.
I hope this helps!

Thanks for your help, ananyof. I have followed your directions through the new style page editor with a test image of dimensions 16:9. I tried one that was 2:3 and it didn’t fill the frame left to right. This brings me to 2 remaining questions:
1) Do you know what the ideal dimension are for the front page static image?
2) I still can’t seem to find a way to get that static text overlay centered over the image as it is on the Sela walk-through. It also looks very opaque to me at this point. Thanks bunches!

Hi Nicole,
I’m not sure about the image dimensions. I basically just fiddled around with mine until it looked OK. And I was also surprised about the near-opacity of the overlay. It looks like it’s 10% transparent, if even that. It looks like that on my site, too, so don’t think you’re doing something wrong.

Hi Emily,
Thanks for the response. Yeah, that’s what I’ll be doing with the image myself. I also was surprised by the overlay opacity. It makes it much less of an “overlay”, lol.
How did you get your overlay to be centered over the image? Mine keeps positioning itself at the bottom of the image (if you look at your “About Me” page, that’s how it looks one my static front page).
Thanks!

Hi Nicole,
It looks like your front page isn’t a static page, is that right? This post will show you how to set one up:
Basically, you need a static page, which is the front page, and a posts page, which is where your blog posts will actually show up. Once you set up the home page as a static page, the overlay should center. At least it did for me!
