image attachment pages and SEO

Hi, I have almost nothing but images on my site and am working on alt text etc.

However, looking into images more, I see that each has an attachment page that can be indexed by Google and cause

    thin content

and potentially causing Google to penalize my site when indexing it.

What are my options for dealing with this on a free site using Twenty Twenty theme?

    can I:

redirect from the attachment pages back to the parent page where the image is attached?
      disable attachment pages?
simply fill in the description enough to make the content less thin? (not a great alternative)?
something esle I don’t know yet to ask about…?

    Thank you!

  • Hi there – You are correct, the attachment pages exist and in theory can get indexed eventually if you link to it somewhere.

The good news is you don’t have to worry about this; the attachment pages don’t show up in your sitemap that we make available to search engines. This means they’re basically invisible to search engines. You might know already, but here’s more about your sitemap: https://wordpress.com/support/sitemaps/

If you were to upgrade to the Business plan, you would have more control over SEO, but upgrading isn’t required to grow traffic and audience to your site. Here’s more about Business plan SEO: https://wpbizseo.wordpress.com/
