image blank in post and media library

I’ve never had any problems with images loading in my previous 300+ posts but today for some reason my image uploads are blank.
I’m uploading from my desktop where the picture is clearly visible but when I upload it it’s a blank square.
When I click on ‘Edit image’ (in Media Library) it is visible but there’s nothing appears when I ‘insert in post’.
When I click ‘preview’ the page loads quickly but continues to search for ages before eventually showing the blank image with a blue question mark in the centre.I’m stumped! Any ideas?

First off with as many images as you are using, go to settings > reading and set your site to show at most 3 or 5 posts per page. Your site loads incredibly slowly and it could be timeout issues. Also, the search engines take into account page loading times when determining search engine ranking and you are risking getting tossed into the basement by them.

I see no missing images on your main page so far, but I’m now at 3 minutes waiting for it to finish loading on my slower wireless internet service. If I went to your site, I would not wait for it to finish loading, I would just hit the browser back button and go elsewhere.

In your experience do you find different browsers interact differently with WordPress? Logging in now with Safari (which I’ve always used previously without any problems) the images are still missing and it’s very slow. With Firefox it’s fine.

Safari and Firefox are both fine. Safari may have stored too many images: just clear its cache, if necessary reset it too.

Same problem with me today out of the blue. Never had probs before (other than doing saves, lately, but there’s a way round it).
First noticed no thumbnails in uploader when trying to upload images for a scheduled post. Was fine last night and the new images are visible if you click ‘edit’. All posts new and old on my blog are now text only on my computer now that I cleared the cache (as advised in WP browser troubleshooting).
Have not changed any settings and using Safari 5.1. Worked with Firefox then it didn’t or very very slow. On next door’s Mac (Firefox) fast but text only.
But all looks fine on my ipad (Safari – standard and ipad versions) – even latest unfinished post which could not have been in the ipad’s cache.
Could it be all down to slow/bad WP connection between me (London) as well as the OP – or too many bloggers all at once. I suspect it will all come back shortly. -

Yes different browsers will interact slightly differently. In Safari, log out, clear the browser cache and cookies, restart Safari and try again. That very well may clear things up.

hi, i have gone on to my site this morning and there are no images on my posts just text. a friend a work looked for me and its the same on her computer?? so confused I have not changed any code or anything! is is maybe to do with the browers at my work being out of date?

Followed you tip Nic and clearing the cookies did it. (just cache did not)
Was a bit dim and thought they meant all cookies which seemed a bit extreme, but the WP ones were easily found and zapped

well this is puzzling.
It was fine again last night and this morning but now I’m back to blank photos via Safari and Firefox shows images on posts already uploaded on the blog but medial library and new posts are blank (it tries to load but at the bottom of the page it just says ‘waiting for nipitinthebud.wordpress files.’Is there anything in apaddleinmypack’s question about server connections (I’m in England too) or is this still a problem to be resolved?. I haven’t been on-line much since yesterday so hardly any new cookies or cache to clear.

I also had to clear cookies again this morning to see images and couldn’t even get on this site yesterday. Since then it’s OK, though post saves are hit and miss as they have been for a few weeks. Don’t know how it all works but I think it’s a small flaw at the WP end (UK servers? is there such a thing?) and will get sorted.
Having delved into this for the first time after a year with WP it seems little things are constantly going wrong and I guess WP are constantly fixing them. -
just logged back in and I really don’t get it! Fine again now in Firefox and new post ok (but blank still in Safari). Hey ho, it’s the first time I’ve had a problem in 2 years so can’t complain.

I’m sorry to keep asking about this but it’s still a problem. Problem yesterday viewing photos with Safari and Firefox so switched to Chrome which was fine.
Today though the only images showing are the 5 posts on the home page (reduced the number as per asacredpath’s suggestion). All other posts have blank images and when I tried to click on it took several minutes to try and load before coming up with this error message.While trying to retrieve the URL: http://nipitinthebud.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/curried-apple-and-carrot-chutney_spices.jpg

Squid did not receive any data for this request.So as all of my images have a WP url does this mean there’s an issue with how they are stored rather than how my web browser is retrieving them?

I think there is a problem with WP servers where our images are stored – overloaded? We have not changed any settings and are doing as we have done without probs since we started.
Every start up since Thursday I am having image problems and slow loading with WP – even for this page. Fixed in my case by clearing WP cookies – dont bother with caches. Thing is, can our readers be bothered work that out if our blogs look incomplete? I doubt it.
Meanwhile my ipad (reading site from other servers?) shows my blog with no probs. -
I’ve tested each blog and any links you’ve shared and I am able to load your images without any troubles. Is this possibly ISP or location dependent? Could you let us know who your ISP is or where generally you are located? I am in NYC today.
Also, if you try loading the media page in your dashboard via https instead of http, does that make any difference for you?

I had the same problem as nicmoorey, but I cleared the WordPress.com cookie, and now images are showing again. Thanks for the support :-)

If you are having trouble viewing images, please try clearing browser cache and cookies first.
Could anyone who is still having trouble viewing images after that please try to capture some additional information? We need the full HTTP headers from the image requests. Request and response.
First, find the URL of an image that is not working for you and open it. If you have the Firebug add-on installed for Firefox, go to Page Speed → Resources and click the arrow to the left of the images so you can see the response headers. It looks like this: http://d.pr/h7BU

Thanks for the ideas. Clearing cookies certainly does it for me with Safari – until the next restart that is. It did seem a bit better today, but if I flick around my posts very soon I get to a page where images wont load – as if it gets bogged down trying to keep up.
I never use Firefox (6 – Mac) but tried it anyway. With all cookies denied my blog loaded as fast as. With ‘accept cookies’ it worked a little slower flicking through posts and eventually bogged down on a page with blank images. That suggests WP cookies could be the problem?
I installed the Firebug as suggested but did not find Page Speed → Resources.
I did something else with Firebug turned on (on a page which now would not load images,- but cookie clearing may have helped
) and got a mass of what looks like source code. Don’t know if that is a Firebug attribute. At one point somewhere it said Declaration Denied a lot of times among the code but I was a bit lost by now.
(I also saw ads on my blog for the first time – yuk! I think I’ll cough up the fee ;-).My ISP is Plusnet (UK). Maybe Janet and Nic are too. It seems to be about a slow connection to WP rather than just images which take longer anyway. As I mentioned, even getting onto this forum page took time on occasions.
