Image Caption Not Displaying
-
Hi,
I have been experiencing an issue, with image caption not showing, when a blog update is made via email.
I am using an iPad with iOS 8.1.3, and the steps I follow are:
Photos taken on camera and uploaded to iPad Camera Roll.
Using Photogene 4.3 Pro, relevant photos reviewed on iPad and edited including adding a caption.
Create blog update as an email on iPad, inserting chosen edited photos complete with captions in their metadata.
Email blog update to my previously set up back-end email address.I have uploaded a recent test blog update, which can be seen at:
https://grahamvickiblog.wordpress.com/2015/03/17/test-4-via-email-with-caption-in-metadata-of-pic/That image has the caption “Ivy Berries” in the image metadata, and when the blog update is viewed on my iPad or laptop, there is no caption.
Last year, as a new user of wordpress.com I had to resort to logging onto my blog website using the iPad and either using the html editor to manually insert cation tags and html code, or edit the photos uploaded to my wordpress.com photo gallery to include the caption. This was very time consuming whilst in McDonald’s in France using their WiFi for over two hours. Admittedly, part of that time was my learning curve on wordpress & the html editor.
Hence the desire to create blog updates offline, with text, photos (with captions in metadata), and then later hop on a WiFi connection and simply send the blog update via email.
I have tried to find online solutions to this issue, but not been successful.
Any help/advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I don’t believe that captions added in metadata translate to image captions on your post. When you upload an image, the EXIF info remains, but I seem to recall that any added info is stripped out. I’m trying to find the earlier forum thread on this topic and will post a link when I do.
For anyone else who may read this thread, here’s info about posting by email and what can be done: https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-by-email/
Since you are using an iPad, have you considered using the iOS app rather than post by email? Since I don’t have an iDevice, I can only say that the Android app allows you to create and save a local draft and then upload it to your site when online. https://en.support.wordpress.com/apps/

FWIW, I downloaded the image from your test post and viewed the file properties in PSE11. Besides the EXIF info, I see a description field containing “Ivy Berries”.

Here’s the earlier forum thread I was referring to https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/xmp-metadata-in-picture-uploaded-in-media-gallery?replies=20#post-1467277
I’ll tag this for Staff attention to see if there is any update on this point.

Thanks for the very quick replies justjennifer – much appreciated.
I’ll have a look at the links you’ve provided and the iOS App, and reply back with findings. :-)

It doesn’t appear as though anything has changed since that previous forum thread you mentioned @justjennifer. I just gave this a try on my side, and it doesn’t appear as though the caption came along through the email.
@grahamvickiblog – As justjennifer mentioned, I would recommend using the app for this purpose. You should be able to set a caption for your images there! Any post created while you’re not connected to WIFI will save locally. When you connect to the internet, you can then publish!

@jeremeyduvall, & @justjennifer
Thanks for the info – much appreciated.
I remember having a go at using the WordPress App last year, and have been looking at it again this evening. I found the link below, which seems to advise at that time, there was no functionality for adding/editing an image caption in the WordPress app.
https://ios.forums.wordpress.org/topic/change-image-titleadd-caption#post-12042
After having a play with the iOS WordPress App, I found that by selecting the inserted image, you can edit several properties, including the caption. So I have done a combined test, of one image with caption added in WordPress app, and the other image which was inserted in the WordPress app after the caption was added by Photogene. The latter image (ivy berries) had the caption stripped off by the WordPress app, and so not surprisingly the caption does not show for the ivy berries in the post at:
https://grahamvickiblog.wordpress.com/2015/05/10/post-from-ios-app-with-photo-captions/
The good news is, the squirrel photo which had the caption added by editing in the WordPress app, shows that caption in the post.
So thanks to you guys, I now have a working method, of creating a blog update offline, including adding photo captions, and uploading the post when on wifi, through using the WordPress iOS app.
Many Thanks
Graham 😄
