image carousel

I am new to WordPress. I noticed on wp.com’s homepage websites created with wordpress. One of them is foodpress (www.foodpress.com). this site has an announcement that seems to say that the site is actually done with another company (http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2010/11/01/introducing-foodpress/). my question is in relation to the foodpress homepage. it uses two carousels to rotate images. i am familiar with how to do this, but with javascript. everything i have read says that i can’t write javascript code on wordpress.com (it must be wordpress.org). so is foodpress.com not actually done with wordpress.com or is there really some way to do the image carousel? i haven’t found out how.

The theme being used on that site with the image carousel is not available to free hosted wordpress.com bloggers here > Appearance > Themes
The custom theme on the official wordpress.com blog is not available to free hosted wordpress.com bloggers either. http://en.blog.wordpress.com/
The VIP hosted wordpress.com blogs are the exception when it comes to FTP access, custom themes, plugins, javacript, etc. http://vip.wordpress.com/ -
Foodpress is done right here on wordpress.com, but it is all completely custom by the wordpress.com team. In other words, they are using things in that page that is not available to the normal blogger.
What we do have here are a few themes that have featured posts sections at the top of the theme, and we also have the new slideshow feature they introduced although it advances things automatically.

Modularity lite has the homepage slideshow feature built in.
