Image Compression

How can I change the image compression on my website? It radically reduces the quality of the image and makes my website look less professional.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

I’m happy to take a closer look at this for you. Have you grabbed screen shots of the issue? Please add them to your media library on the site so that I can take a look.

Which views of the site are messing up?
    – Is it a mobile view, tablet, desktop?
    – browser type?
    – version number?

Please share as many details as you can so that we can properly investigate. I’d also like to know if it is a specific image or all of the images on the site?

    Awesome thank you.

I am wanting to switch over to Word press instead of my original web hosting server. However, it seems that the image compression on wordpress is much higher than my other server. Here is an example of wordpress and the other photos

I am using my desktop on a 4K monitor. (however I have another monitor and it looks the same)
    I am using Google Chrome
Not too sure which version, it doesn’t say at the bottom of my dashboard, I wanted to go into the Appearance tab and go to “Edit” so I could change the function.php file to a lower compression but when I go into the Appearance tab, there is no “Edit” tab there

my other website is jrpro.ca, there you can see the homepage and the uncompressed banner photo, my website here is jrprodotca.wordpress.com as I am wanting to switch over but I want my photos to be nice and crisp. I took screen shots too but I don’t know how to upload them here, but if you look at the two links and compare the homepage banner photos, you can clearly see that jrpro.ca is much crisper and clearer

  • Hi there,

The image compression we use on WordPress.com should not cause any noticeable quality loss in images. But that also depends on the image.

The image you have set as header on your WordPress.com site is a .png that’s over 20MB large. That is beyond massive for the web – an entire website that’s properly designed won’t load a full megabyte in a browser when opened, so our system needs to scale that image down significantly in order for it to not severely impact your site’s loading times. The cropped version actually being loaded in the source code, https://jrprodotca.files.wordpress.com/2018/11/cropped-img_3369-fraser-river1.png, is around 2MB big.

The image dimensions are also much larger than your theme will display on even the widest computer monitors. The recommendation for this theme is to use an image 2000px wide, and we recommend doubling up for best results on a Retina display which is around 4000px, but your image is 5472px wide.

Lastly, it looks like your image is saved using the Adobe RGB color profile. For best results with images that need to be resized on WordPress.com we recommend saving them in the sRGB color profile instead, and this is likely the factor that has the biggest impact overall here.

Please edit your original image and try the following:

    1) Resize the image to around 4000px wide,
    2) Convert it to a low-compression JPEG rather than a PNG, and
    3) Convert it to the sRGB color profile.

Re-upload the new version of the image and check if that gives you any different results.
