Image copyright laws
-
Hey there, I get the gist of the general copyright laws and that you have to obtain consent or buy the image to use it. However, this site will contain a lot of reviews of specific products and I would like to include the image of that product. If I take a picture of the product and use it on my site, is that copyright since its not MY product but I took the picture of the product? I know it seems like a silly question, but I can’t find any answers on this and I want to make sure I don’t copyright anything.
Thanks!

If you take a picture of a product (spoon for instance) – you own the copyright since it is your work
The exception to the you take the picture thing that I am aware of – is if you take a picture of a piece of artwork – even if it is public art – usually the artist retains rights to the image (a friend of mine is a Graphic Artist and got tripped up on this one when she took some pictures of some brass footsteps embedded in a public sidewalk – she & her insurance company offered a fair settlement and the artist sued & won – but the artist got less than the original offer and way less than his court costs and legal fees)

Most companies that provide products for review also provide images and other promotional bumpff that you are allowed to use.

Wow these are both super helpful thank you! Especially the note about taking an image of art, I would not have thought of that!
Timetheif, how would I find these specific images? Just on their website or I assume to ask for them?
