image displayed when sharing link

    Hi there.

When type my link into social media/ whatsapp etc. It pops up with a little box with an image, and another box with the site title/ a few lines of text from the website. Can you change the image it shows? My link is currently showing an image that appears at the bottom of my homepage, but i’ve added another photo and removed that one but it still shows it when typing a link. If that makes sense? I have also cleared my cache.

    Any help appreciated!

  • Hi there,

What image appears depends on the service you’re sharing to – they control that, not us. In most cases they’ll use the featured image set on the post, or if there isn’t a featured image, the first useable image that appears in the post. Whether or not an image is “useable”, depends on the image size requirements of the specific service you’re sharing to.

Once a particular link has been shared to, for example, Facebook, Facebook saves the preview for that link so that next time someone shares the link they just use the existing info instead of checking the site again. That means even if you completely remove the image from the post later, Facebook might still use it in their preview.

In the case of Facebook specifically, you can force them to check the post again and fetch a new image by using their debugger tool at https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/sharing/

But if a service does not offer a tool like that, there’s no way to force them to check for an updated image.

You can find more info on how this works here:
