image editor not working

  hi all,
  i cant edit images on my wordpress.i cant crop images nor use any of the editing functionalities ..images get uploaded but cant crop them.i searched the forum for all the related topics and tried all of them but none of them worked for me.i have wordpress 3.1 on ubuntu 10.4..any help would be greatly appreciated
