Image expand-on-click (lightbox feature) suddenly has stopped working?

  • Unknown's avatar

    HI,

Was just making a few slight tweaks to my website this evening, and now the expand-on-click feature has suddenly stopped working. The expand feature still appears on hover, but when clicked nothing happens?

This has happened site-wide. I have tried disabling the link and re-enabling, but alas still nothing. The link to image file works, but not the expand on click. I have searched around all settings but found nothing. I did find some info online about a very recent update, but they had stated this had all been fixed.

Anyone out there help or shed some light on this issue?

    Kind regards,

    Jay

I have noticed the same thing. Indeed, the option to turn the feature on or off has disappeared from Image Settings. This was bust very recently, fixed temporarily and now it’s vanished. What’s going on WordPress?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, the same fault occurred in December and it took a month to fix it. The other day it happened again and, as the OP says, the option to turn it on/off has also disappeared this time. I am running a photography-based website which relies on people being able to see the images larger than a thumbnail. Can we have a response please?

If you are having the same problem, please add a comment so that it keeps this thread at the top of the list. Otherwise it will just be ignored.

As you can see in previous threads – https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/expand-on-click/ -, this is a known problem and wordpress.com engineers are investigating it and are working on a solution.

No, that’s not right. The problem that I reported in December was resolved a few weeks ago – but a different problem has emerged that has, once again, rendered the expand on click function inoperable. I have seen no response from WordPress staff that acknowledges the new problem and I look forward to that changing soon …

I’ve noticed that the ‘expand-on-click’ feature is now enabled as a setting to create a link from an image (which is presumably why it has disappeared from the right-hand panel of image block settings). A test post in the current Twenty Twenty-Four theme functions properly, whereas the same settings in my own theme (Dyad 2) don’t function at all.

Better pre-release testing is clearly wanted, but meanwhile, will WordPress please at least acknowledge the new problem?

The issue has disappeared on my blogs. It was plainly theme-related: does anyone else have a continuing problem?

  • Hey there,

It looks like this issue may have been related to a recent update of Gutenberg. The new releases have been coming out quickly, with the WordPress 6.5 being released soon. Can anyone share if you are still experiencing this issue? If so, we can investigate and file a bug report for the new bug.

Thanks! Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi. Just checked and seems to now be working on my site via the link to ‘expand-on-click’ as clivesharrison mentions above. The theme I am using is ‘alto-focus’.

    Best, Jay

@clivesharrison you posted in another forum thread that the expand on click feature moved into the image block toolbar and also provided a very helpful screenshot.

Here’s another screenshot for those who didn’t see that thread.

TBH, I wouldn’t naturally think to look in the LINK icon in the toolbar for this feature. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    Thank you @staff-dragon
