Image in reader preview
-
Is there a link that I’m missing that explains how to set a featured image so it looks whole in the reader preview?
Doesn’t seem to matter what size I put into my post, and i’ve edited to several, when i look it up on the reader the preview zooms into the middle of it and I get a blurry partial preview of the picture that looks horrid.

Hi –
It’d be great if you can take a screen shot of what you’re seeing. Add it right in to the site’s media library where we can review it.

I added a smaller version of the page header to a post for an example.
Uploaded the screen cap of the reader to the media library. Latest upload “screencap.jpg”
Zooms in on the center and pixulates the image. Though pixulates isn’t really a word but it should be.
Would like an individual insert for posts depending on topic subject but cannot figure out what the site wants for parameters. Size doesn’t seem to matter looking at other pictures from the Reader. No matter what I use it zooms in on the center and blurs it.

Thanks so much for uploading that example.
I noticed the image you are using is far wider than it is tall.
When this happens, the Reader will crop the image and focus on the center when presenting a thumbnail version of the image in the Reader. This is also causing the image to be very pixelated.
The various ways a post can appear in the Reader are called, “Reader Post Cards”: https://wordpress.com/support/reader/#reader-post-cards
Images that work best in the Reader are rectangle, but with a width to height ratio more like a camera photo or TV screen (4:3 or 16:9 ratio). These require little to no cropping and appear clearly.
The image in the example you shared with us is custom. Alternatives here would be to create a new custom image to feature in this post, or use a different image entirely – both alternatives would need to meet the specs described above.

Done again with a 4:3 ratio image. 400x300px “test.png”
Zooms in on the center and pixulates the image in the reader. “test-pic.png”
So what’s the trick?

Forgot, test pic is the same thread as above.

Hi there,
There’s no way to prevent the center-cropping.
The Reader will only use images that are at least 350px wide, but for the standard post card, like what the Reader shows for your most recent post, the actual thumbnail is downsized to 250px, and then center-cropped to fit the available space for the thumbnail in the Reader card.
The quality loss is because this resizing is being done by the browser itself, on the fly as the image loads, and this simply doesn’t work well with PNG images. If you convert the image into a JPG that might help, even though PNG is the better format for the type of image you have here.
