image not appearing in shortcode

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi, I’m using this shortcode for my posts. I’m trying to change the link by copying link from my instagram account but only an icon is appearing without image.
    1. How do I ensure the image is visible when pasting the link from instagram?
    2. How do I paste the link for image stored in my computer?

    Thanks.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    This is the shortcode I’ve used.
    [recipe title="xx" servings="4" Cooking time="15 mins" difficulty="easy" image="https://www.instagram.com/p/BwqZQbJA2KW/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet"]

    Hi,

    See the Instagram Embeds support page for information and instructions. There are some shortcode options mentioned in the support page, but none resembling your example above.

    1. How do I ensure the image is visible when pasting the link from instagram?

    First, the example that you provided isn’t a link. In a WordPress.com page or post it displays as a text box with an underscored title, several items under the title, and a broken image below all. I guess the image is broken because it’s inside the text box shortcode. It works fine on a line by itself, and will probably work when used within shortcodes such as those suggested in the support page.

    2. How do I paste the link for image stored in my computer?

    I don’t know if that’s possible. Apparently you can drag and drop and image from your device into a page or post as described in the Insert an Image from your Computer section of the Adding Images to Posts or Pages support page, but I’ve not had much experience in that method.

    What I ordinarily do is to upload images either to the media library and then insert them into a page or post, or to insert images directly into a page or post. In the former case, my chosen method is somewhat analogous to that described in the Adding Files From Your Computer section of the Media Library support page, followed by a steps that resemble those described in the Insert an Image from your Media Library section of the Adding Images to Posts or Page support page.

    In the latter case, my typical method is similar to that described in the Add Media support page.

    I’ve often wondered why these instructions are scattered in so many different support documents.

    Hi, this is the page where I’ve found the info. Thanks.

    Thanks! I wasn’t aware of that support page. It’s very late where I am and I don’t have time to try to inform myself about that and try to detect where your example went wrong, so I’ll call for staff attention. I’ll check back again tomorrow or ASAP.

    Note that in the example in the Recipes support page the image is a WordPress.com media file,
    image="https://en-support.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/food-dinner-pasta-broccoli.jpg"
    whereas yours is an Instagram file. There’s no resume to assume that you can substitute an Instagram media file directly for a WordPress.com media file in the code.

    Ok, thanks for the explanation. Appreciate it.

    Hey, I’ve managed to figure this out. I go to media, select the image, click edit and copy the link.

  • Hi there,

    Looks like you’ve figured it out, but just want to confirm you can only use an image URL in the shortcode. It doesn’t have to be from the WordPress.com media library, but it must be a URL with the actual file name ending in .jpg or .png, possibly also .gif.

    An Instagram link doesn’t link to the image file directly, but rather to an Instagram post, so that won’t work in the shortcode. For the same reason you wouldn’t be able to use a Google Photos image here as they obscure the image URL. But an image hosted on Flickr, for example, should work.

    @cazzycomau, You’re welcome. : -)

    Thanks for that explanation, @kokkieh. : -)

    Correction to my last post:

    "There’s no resume to assume" should have been "There's no reason to assume."
