  How do you install a permanent image on a page, like above the sidebar menu?

  Are you referring to a header image like this one?

  The featured image on the homepage works best with images at least 1140 wide.

  Custom Header

  Motif supports a custom header image that you can use to upload your own logo. You can choose to display the header text or hide it.
