Image Optimization

Hi,
This article https://wordpress.com/support/media/image-optimization/ says that images sizes can be changed. What size should they be changed to when putting them into the media library? I did not see what size they should be changed to in the article.
If header images can be adjusted what should they be adjusted to before they get put into media library?
I am using Escutcheon theme it says that header image should be Your theme works best with an image with a header size of 1080 × 300 pixels — you’ll be able to crop your image once you upload it for a perfect fit.
When I have tried to change the header image I want to use using a image editing software I am unable to change the 300 pixels if I try to change the 1080 pixels. If you know why please explain.
Thanks.

Hi,

That number changes on a number of preferences: do you like big full sized images on large screens with crisp resolutions? And is media space not an issue? If so you can upload them full size. The system will resize and crop for you as needed.
Otherwise, if you want to save space, you might try resizing a copy of your images to 2 two 3 times the width needed by your theme.

I am guessing your images are taller rectangles. If you resize to 1080px wide (or 2160px, or 3240px) the height will likely be taller, so some themes might crop that, or you can pre-crop the image if you’d like.

If the system does resize and crop as needed when should I try to resize an image myself?

How do I do this?
Thanks.

If you’re worried about using up your media library space, that’s pretty much the only reason, otherwise our system does ensure that the correct sized image for the viewing device is always served.
For space limits based on plan level, please see https://wordpress.com/support/space-upgrade/
How do I do this?
You can find your theme’s recommended image sizes at https://wordpress.com/theme/escutcheon under “Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels)” at the bottom.
You can then use your image editor of choice to re-size the original images upon upload.
Personally, I recommend just uploading the originals. I’m kind of lazy that way, WordPress takes care of resizing the images upon display any way, and I never know when we’ll get another advance like Retina/HiDPI screens where images I uploaded 10 years ago are now too small/blurry (laugh/cry).
If you’re looking to save space though, then I recommend uploading images that are twice the size of your theme’s recommended max image width. In your theme’s case, that’s 1080 pixels wide, so go for an image size of 2160 pixels wide.
(this is all of course assuming your images are already larger than 2160 pixels wide and you’re just scaling them down to save space, don’t make an image larger than it originally is)

How does increasing the image width save space wouldn’t that take up more space?
How do I find out the size of the image?
Thanks.

Increasing the width would take up more space in the media library yes. staff-blorbo didn’t suggest that as a way to save space, but as a way to ensure your images display at the best possible quality on Retina screens.
You can see the dimensions of your image by opening it in any image editing software, or in Windows Explorer by right-clicking it and selecting Properties. We also show the dimensions of images in the media library after you upload them.

I don’t see where the dimensions show in the media library where do I see them?

You need to click on an image and select Edit to see that:

I didn’t click on edit first to see the dimensions of the image.
Would be nice if you could hover on the image to be able to see the dimensions of the image.
Thanks.
