Image Quality degraded in Melody
-
Hi again,
A couple weeks ago in a previous thread, we worked on a number of CSS customizations to solve my issues with image proportions and overall layout of the posts in the Melody theme.
I’m following up on this in a new thread because I’ve noticed a different issue, where the quality of my images is degraded and I suspect this is due to the CSS customizations that were made earlier.
I’m hoping there’s something we can do to reestablish the picture and pixel quality of the initial image.
Thanks in advance!

I see that you have many threads here on WordPress.com community forums: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/profile/danafashina
Can you share the exact thread that you had the other day to make the multiple CSS changes you mentioned?
With that information, I can have a look and help further.

Sure thing!
That thread can be found at the link below: -
Hi @danafashina, can you give me the url of a place where this is happening and I can see what I can do. This may be a very simple fix, but I need to look at an example.

On the featured images, under Quick Specs on the Melody Theme Showcase page, the recommended size is 1400px wide, and the image you are using is 2291px wide. That means that our software has to downsize that considerably to fit in the available space. As a test, can you prepare another copy of that image at 1400px wide by whatever length it ends up at and upload that and replace that image and see how that looks?

Hi @thesacredpath,
I tried scaling it down from the full size parameters (2291 x 1594) to large (1000 x 696). This caused the overall image to reduce in size and I couldn’t really tell if the grainy-ness and degradation has been resolved.
A smaller sized picture is also not what I want :(I have a lot of @media codes in my CSS editor, could any of these be contributing to this issue?
-
1000 width would be a problem, as you found out. I would suggest 1400px wide since that is what the theme is designed for. If you can try that and let me know how things go, we can work from there.
-
Ok cool! So I change the little box in the CSS editor where it says, ‘media width’ to ow say 1400px.
Sadly, still nothing.Quality still is degraded.

I’m actually talking about editing the actual image in an image editing program and then upload that new 1400px wide image to your media library and assign it to the page as a featured image.
The Media Width field below the CSS edit area is to let WordPress know when you have used custom CSS to widen the post/page content area so that it will size images correctly.

Oh I see…
Wait so I’m going to have to manually resize every image before I upload?
That’s a pain :(Is there another way we can get around that?

Each theme has recommended sizes for the images based on the available space allowed for the image. Some list both a height and width, some only a recommended width and can use any height. If you use images that are far larger than that recommended size, then the WordPress software has to create new images off of your original in the size needed by the theme, and although the software is quite good at it, it isn’t as good as say, Photoshop or another image editing program on your computer. If you do it on your computer, then the results will be much better. There isn’t really anyway we can fix that through the WordPress software or through CSS.
On the image on the Rain page, the WP software has to take a 2291px wide image and basically downsize it 50%. Photoshop can do that and the results are quite good. Web software, not just WordPress, simply doesn’t have the horsepower of something like Photoshop.
For the best results, the images should be at least close to the recommended size to get the best display on the site.

Thank you for taking the time to explain it so thoroughly, I’ll make the necessary adjustments as you reccomended.
Thanks again @TheSacredPath!

Can I ask you another quick question?
Right now when i look at posts on my mobile phone, the images are sort of shifted to the left, as if I have a right margin.Do you have any ideas on that?
-
Hi, it looks like you have the mobile theme activated, which isn’t necessary with Melody since it is a responsive theme designed to work on all devices. I would suggest going to your WP Admin dashboard, then to Appearance > Mobile and disable the mobile theme and then visit your site.

hi,
Sorry for the delay, I think I forgot to click ‘notify me on replies’, sorry!!
I initially had it disabled but then given the issues, I thought maybe I ought to enable it.So – i’ll go ahead and disable it but then I’m back to square 1 :(
Also – resizing the images worked like a charm <333

Hooray, glad that did the trick. Let us know if you have any further questions or problems.
