Image Quality – or lack of!

I have tried resizing my uploaded images and still no luck improving the quality. Anybody know how I can improve my photos – they are terribly blurred and unclear. I have downloaded the quality compression, sharpen resize image and resized image quality plugins but they are not showing in my dashboard/media library/settings. Can anyone help? I was using a gmail website previously and decided to change to wordpress – the difference in image quality between the two sites is shocking! Please help :-)

  • First: You cannot install any plugins on WordPress.com: http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/

Second: Resizing images after inserting them into a post can lead to a drastic reduction in quality, as you’ve noticed. For the best results, resize and optimize your images before uploading. If you don’t have photo editing software, Picasa can also do it (although only to preset values) or the online tool http://pixlr.com/ also works well.

Also check the maximum size images your theme can display. The absolute maximum is in the 1200 pixels range, so uploading any images larger than that is just wasting your media storage. You can also use a tool like http://www.jpegmini.com/ to trim down the file size of images.
