Image re-upload?

So I’d like to modify a lot of my MANY images already uploaded here.
http://matthewsmodelmarine.wordpress.com (want to add copyright text…).

When uploading a new version of an image, WordPress seems to not over-write, but it renames the new image with a 1,2,3 etc appended on the filename (Rant: and WHY won’t the media manager thingy list actual filenames and file sizes in the summary instead of making me open each image one at a time??? End rant).

So do I have any tricks available besides manually deleting and reloading each image?
And once I do this, will existing html links be broken, or will they work as originally published?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Even if you delete the images, wp will re-name the image for you, with a number added to the name.

I think if you delete and wait long enough for the original name to be removed from all the servers then you can re-upload with the original name, but I don’t know how long that takes: days, weeks, months?

That means that your links will be broken.
