Image resizing

  • Unknown's avatar

Not a fan of the new-ish editing world, with the blocks and whatnot. I just don’t get the concept. I inserted a new image on a page and I want to resize it (it’s too large and doesn’t match others on the page). While clicking on the little editing symbol allows me to kinda sorta center the image, I can’t change the size of the image like I used to be able to do. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hello,
As I don’t have access to your admin area, I don’t know why the image toolbar is not showing up.
If the image editing toolbar is not showing. You can try to edit your image in the block properties panel in the sidebar.
In the image block you have some options to change the size of the image.
Click on the image and look for the gear symbol in the upper right corner of the editor. It should open properties panel. Click block and choose one of the options.

    Option – Image size:

    • Thumbnail
    • Medium
    • Large
    • Full Size

    Option – Image Dimensions:
    choose width and height

Or choose the percentage that the image will appear with the pre-defined values:

    • 25%
    • 50%
    • 75%
    • 100%

You can also try to resize the image by dragging the tabs (small circles) around the image.

If it doesn’t work, I would try to update my version of WordPress.

    Hope this helps

I don’t have anything you reference. On the right, it shows “Page” and “Block” with a blue line under it. Below that, it has a little keyboard and “Classic” and “Use the classic WordPress editor,” however, nothing. The little gear thingy above just toggles the sidebar in and out.

I DID get my picture to resize by dragging a corner, but all my others were a standard “Medium” size (or something), I think, so I had to eyeball it.

How do I update WordPress if I’m on the website? I’m not using an app or anything.

  • I think you are using the classic editor.

I will send you an article showing how to upgrade to the block editor.

Please let me know if it worked.

I don’t have any plugins, so there’s nothing to “deactivate,” so I’m kind of dead in the water.

Sounds like I need to use the “classic block,” but it would seem that within that I have to have individual blocks, which I don’t want. Who needs that extra layer of blah blah? Is that correct? And how does switching to “classic block” (assuming I ever figure out how to do that) impact the data already on my page. I DON’T want to have to re-enter all of it.

Seems like starting from scratch is really the only way to cleanly do this, but what about us poor old schlubs who are set in our ways, have had these websites for years, and now have to learn new tricks? Not user-friendly and I’m scared to death I’ll hit something and never get back my old stuff that was kind of working.

  • Hi there,

You have two options for resizing an image, provided you’re using an image block:

    1) Click on the image, then you should be able to just drag the edges with your mouse.
    2) In the editor sidebar on the right you should see image size controls that lets you set a percentage size, or exact pixel values.

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/#resize-images

Below that, it has a little keyboard and “Classic” and “Use the classic WordPress editor

Can you share a link/title for the post you’re working on? It sounds like you might be working inside the classic block, in which case the editor sidebar won’t show you settings specific to the image.

If you use the classic block, dragging the edges of the image is the only way to resize it. The image block gives you a lot more options, and control over how the image is displayed.

but all my others were a standard “Medium” size (or something),

Those are image size presets – they offer a one-click way to size all images the same for a given preset. You can change the size for each of the presets from Settings ->Media in the dashboard:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/settings/media-settings/#image-sizes

Just keep in mind if you select a preset that’s bigger than the actual full size of the image you uploaded, the image will just show at full size. It won’t be stretched to fit the preset you chose.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

If it doesn’t work, I would try to update my version of WordPress.

WordPress.com sites are always on the latest version of WordPress, so there’s nothing to update.

I think you are using the classic editor.

The OP explicitly mentioned using blocks, which confirms they’re not in the classic editor. However, they might be using the classic block, which is not the same thing:

I read this comment “On the right, it shows “Page” and “Block” with a blue line under it. Below that, it has a little keyboard and “Classic” ” and inferred that it was the classic editor.

I will read the article you recommended. Thanks for teaching me.

    @kokkieh — Here’s the page I’m working on:

    https://wordpress.com/page/gadzooksnv.wordpress.com/34

I can drag the image to change the size. Other than that, nothing. Nothing in the right sidebar other than under “Block” a little keyboard, “Classic” and “Use the classic WordPress editor.”

If I’m using the “classic editor,” it doesn’t work on my page like it used to with easily edited pictures. And if it’s already a block, and why does it say at the top “convert to blocks?”

I’m coming to believe that I don’t think in WordPress’s graphic manner. I see a “page” as a blank piece of paper with minimal text, some links, and .jpegs. Something that can be created in a Word document. Is this where I’m blind? Is it more like a corkboard with multi-colored Post-Its stuck on it?

If so, do I have to reinvent the page and essentially start over or can it be a mish mash of the two concepts?

  • Hi @joanatkinson, thanks for the link. I’ve confirmed you’re using a Classic Block inside the block editor.

Is it more like a corkboard with multi-colored Post-Its stuck on it?

It’s really more like building blocks honestly: you can use text blocks, image blocks, buttons and links — plus patterns, logos, headers, footers if your theme supports that. It gives you a lot more flexibility if you want it.

If you want to get a quick feel for what’s possible without changing any existing pages or posts at all, I’d recommend making a copy of one as a test: https://wordpress.com/support/copy-a-post-or-page/

Convert that test to blocks. You’ll see text and images, but now if you tap a paragraph you’ll see it’s in its own block with its own settings. You can type text to just write, or type /image on its own line to enter an image. We’ve been working hard to make that simpler :). You can also group blocks if you want to have a section with a different background color, for example.

If you want to delve in a bit deeper, click the + icon in the upper right of the editor, and tap patterns. Try inserting one you like and modifying it with your text and image. You can change colors and what not, too.

If you don’t like it, you can trash it — no harm done, but you’ll still have a clearer understanding of blocks. If you do like it, select all and copy the whole thing into the real post.

We have a video here that goes over much of the options:
    https://wordpress.com/support/using-the-block-editor/

The video reminds me. Some people (like this person) don’t like the floating block toolbar. You can pin that to the top if you want to.

    Does that help?

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay! I’ve got it figured out! And it only took me two hours to do one page!

The videos were very helpful, until they weren’t. I’d suggest breaking them up into smaller chunks. Just when I thought I might actually understand how to do things, then something about patterns and group blocks was thrown at me, so I quit watching.

My problem has been solved and I appreciate all the help (videos, links, patience). Now, please don’t make anymore changes in my lifetime — I’m too old for this s**t!

    Joan
