Image Searches Leading to my blog

Same thing for me includes google image searches as well in the past couple days….strange.

I had several google image searches today (Friday) — searching by my exact photo name/url. I’ve had a few in the past, but several in one day hasn’t happened before.

And the photos they searched for are nothing to write home about. I’m mystified.

What’s strange is that up until lately these google image searches did not appear on my blog hosted at wordpress.com but when I moved my domain to A Small Orange suddenly I had all kinds of Google searches for images and they have continued right up until today.

I’m seeing the same thing – specific url searches, that is. And the pics are nothing special.

• Unknown's avatar

Thank God you guys are seeing that too! I thought I was loosing it.

But yeah, no special images and about 95% of my referrals are now Google Image results. On the other hand my hits have gone up a little, so I’m not too bothered. ;)

Oh, I’m not getting that many.

(Sorry for the formatting error :( I really wish they would enable a preview here since we can’t edit)

I agree with Cat that these are ADDITIONAL hits, so it’s a good thing. Now, if only it boosted our pagerank somehow.

Cnsidering mine is at 0 it can’t get any worse!

• Unknown's avatar

I thought I was the only one with a 0!

All my referrals (but 2) are google images as well.
I hope they are not stealing the pics and wonder if there is a way to “turn off right click save pictures as” here on wordpress?

• Unknown's avatar

Sorry to say, no way to turn off right click here at wordpress.com. It’s not foolproof anyway as they can simply take a screenshot (lower res, but they get it just the same).

If it was hotlinking, it wouldn’t show as a referral. It’s just literally people looking through their image search and coming to your blog.

If you want to disable hotlinking, you can do so by hosting your images on Flickr, and I believe that gives you the option of “authorizing” one place to post them besides Flickr (ie your blog and no other), but am not 100% sure.

………..just want to chime in here to say that i’ve had the same thing for two days in a row….. do i need to get paranoid over this? I don’t understand the dialog…………

Bottom line: no need to freak out. This is a GOOD thing. It means that Google wasn’t reading our blogs properly before, and now is at least reading the images okay. WordPress.com blogs are suddenly doing well in searches for images, whereas they were almost completely overlooked before. This is a good thing in my opinion.

@thesacredpath… thanks…. any deterrant is better than none though!?! Even if they get a lower res pic.

@raincoaster… um what is ~hotlinking~ ?
Google referred them based on specific words with regards to “motorcycles”… so I get why they came :)

Hotlinking is where people let YOU host the image and they post it on your site, using your bandwidth to do it, rather than upload it in their own webspace. For people who pay for bandwidth, this is a big, big deal; a friend of mine had all her images hotlinked late on a Friday night and by Monday morning had a five thousand dollar bandwidth bill.

But at WordPress.com, we don’t pay for bandwidth, so it’s not such an issue. I do know that from time to time my images get hotlinked, particularly by bots who steal all content on blog posts, so sometimes I go back to the posts I suspect it’s happening to and change the pictures, just to mess with those people. But it doesn’t cost you anything if you don’t, since you’re hosted here.

The first sentence should read “and they post it on THEIR site”. Sorry, typing too fast.

I’m having the same thing. There is no rhyme or reason to the images people are searching for — photos of 2007 “fashion” shows where women wear hoods covering their entire faces (and that’s “fashion”), photos of Bratz dolls, all sorts of stuff.

I’m also glad it’s not just me, but it’s irritating because there are so many of these things they fill up my “Referrers” list and I can’t see the regular referrals from my regular readers or from places I might have been linked.
